Question How to find the host of a website?

I got ripped off and another website designer has stolen part of my website text. I have his address and everything but if he does not reply I want to write to the host a cease and desist letter. But how can I find the host of a website?

Here is my earlier post about the situation:

Blatant Website Copy

Thanks for any help.

Dani

You can do a WHOIS search but sometimes this doesn't help. It didn't when I tried it for your domain earlier. Hold tight for a moment, though - I may have another plan...

Dani,

Apologies for the earlier confusion - it does seem to be hosted at GoDaddy. Domaintools.com was used to check this, if you'd like to take a look for your own information.

dmcghie, you'll need to be sure to follow the strict guidelines outlined by the DMCA law rather than simply sending a c&d letter to GoDaddy. First you need to contact GoDaddy to find out the name and contact info for their "designated agent", then you'll need to send that person a letter or email following the guidelines that GoDaddy may provide or as outlined on the page below under "notification of claimed infringement." If GoDaddy's legal department has their act together, they'll reject your claim unless it follow this format precisely.

sometimes it's not so easy to find a host.... if that's the case do the following...

whois lookup on the domain in question.. look at the name servers...

if the name servers are nsx.the domain in question.com then look for the IP address.. if not provided in whois lookup, ping the domain.

if you have the name servers do a whois lookup on them or try simply dropping the nsX at the front and see if their website comes up.

if you have to go via the IP route (there are many sites but I use go to dnsstuff.com and you can do an IPwhois lookup. This will give you the datacentre of the domain which might be the host provider but again not always, it will give you more information however with which to track them down.

Sometimes using the IP Information tool there will provide you with the main domain using that IP (if it's a shared IP) which is in most cases the hosting company.

Glad you were able to find your host dmcghie, thought I'd post this for others who may be having some problems trying to track where things are.

These tools will also assist when a designer or small host company disappears (goes out of business) and may help retrieve some lost files from your site...

As always do regular backups of everything! =o)

It has been sorted. The thief changed the text on his site. So mission accomplished. Until the next time.

Thank you for all your help!

Netcraft.com can be a good resource, as can domainsdb.net

For future reference, you can also use tracert.

Start | Run | command.com takes you to the command prompt, then type tracert, followed by the domain of the site you are trying to trace (without the http:// or the www). You will get a list of all the nodes on the internet that the packets of data pass through between you and the web site. The penultimate line will give you both the IP address and name of the host. You can then do a WHOIS search to find their details.
