Anti-viruses - online and off

I've heard anti-virues bad mouthed for as long as I can remember. Some say McAfee is worse than Norton's. Some say Norton's is worse.

Some people don't like the free one's and tell me that you get what you pay for, and others say the free one's are better.

Since this is the Security thread and since I've been doing so much research on the subject - I want to know YOUR thoughts!

Which anti-virus program is the best? And are online virus scans helpful? What do you say?
