Microsoft Virus???

I recently went to MS and obtained a driver, (automatic MS scan for updates) "CRASH", Blue screen, (deep blue)... warning memory dump being done... part the way through the install..

At first I though it was a hard drive fault but fdisk, format, reinstall windows, scandisk, (and other hard drive test) the hard drive show OK.

Although MS downloads seem to still cause "CRASH", Blue screen, (deep blue)... warning memory dump being done....

Any ideas??

What version of Windows are you running, when is the last time you updated etc.
If you ran fdisk and scandisk, I must assume Win98?

Did I read correct, that you re-installed windows, and it still happened?

There may be some issues with microsoft updates, I know that some of them have caused grief with Win XP users. I will look into that, but first, the basics.

What Anti-virus are you running, as well?

I have also had to not use a video driver from the updates at one time, there may be hardware issues as well, but is it just during the install of this one driver?

I am using Win XP.

Actions, after first crash:=

a) fdisk then format to completely clean the hard drive.

b) Install Windows 98, required to update to Windows XP, (is there any other way?)

c) Install Windows XP

d) Run scandisk checks out that the hard drive is OK

e) Run Burn in Tests diagnostic http://www.passmark.com checks out that the hard drive is OK.

f) Try Window Updates (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
) CRASH blue screen, memory dump.

g) Reinstall as above without Window Updates, (Insecure but works)

Window Updates have been used before without any problems, this is only since trying to update drivers:-

Silicon Image storage software update released on May 12 2004.

Supported hardware.

(Please note I do not use RAID, although this shows up on BIOS boot up)

If it is xp you should be able to use dumpchk.exe to find out which driver is causing the problem.

This doesn't sound like a virus problem to me, more of a hardware issue.

Working OK now BUT...

I cleaned eveything off again and reinstalled.

updated Windows except the driver update and the machine is back to it's normal happy self.


BUT... I dare not update "THAT" driver.
