As I am new to Canada from the US, I was wondering what Canadian web hosting company you all might recommend.

Things to include might be a good Control Panel, Tech Support response time, or variety of server options.

If you're looking for VPS or Dedicated servers there's a few things to look for when in Canada eh! make sure they are in a good strong IT area there's a few across the country, Front Street downtown Toronto is one that comes to mind as very reliable. And shop around and ask a ton of questions, prices can be a bit higher than shopping south of the boarder, but there's some really good quality data centres up here!

If you're just looking for virtual hosting, it really doesn't make a huge difference... But if it matters to you then make sure you do a whois on the IP(s) of the host, as many hosts actually have their servers in the US.. Also ask as quite a few of us have servers in both Countries.

I've been using Blacksun.ca. since 2001 and I really like them. They operate out of Innovation Place at Saskatoon University, their people know their stuff, and I can call or email at any time and get a real English speaking person and they always have time to help me with a problem, answer a question and really like it when you ask what the weather is like there.
Their prices are very good with $155 for hosting and domain annual fee for the basic (basic has lots!) and it goes up from there depending on what you want. They have everything and were using Urchin stats long before Google acquired it. You can get more info at blacksun.ca.
They have onsite servers and have upgraded them regularly over the years.
I've only ever had one site down once in that period of time, and it turned out to be my fault. They have 100% uptime.

I have been asked this question before about good Canadian web host. But the last time I posted the link they removed it. Had been with my host over year, they have been great. I spent a good two years looking for and trying out various Canadian web hosts (since I was born and raised in Toronto and currently live in Montreal). But --and with all due respect to the true north strong and free-- I finally decided that as far as features, services and price are concerned, much better web hosting deals are to be found south of the border.

The reason I am looking for a good Canadian web host is to get my clients' sites into the Canadian search engines. I have found that if a website is hosted in one country, it has trouble getting into the search engines of another.

Does anyone have a good host in Vancouver?

Hey Paul,

I am in Canada, but most of the servers we use for our clients' sites are located south of the border... There might be a benefit on where the server IP is located but I'm not so sure.. I even have clients in Japan that are top in the search engines there that host with us here...

If anything I would think that would be the larger concern (trying to rank in overseas company and hosting in North America).. I believe US and Canada are close enough that it doesn't matter quite as much.
