HI Everyone,
Need some advice for the following: I own a couple web sites that are doing fairly well. However they cannot sustain a living for me at this time. My regular job requires that I relocate every 3 months.
How should I handle this?
Should I always change my contact and about Infor on my sites?
Is there some way I can keep a permament home base without being there?
What tax and business regulations do I need to follow?
How about toll free numbers? Do I need to keeep this?
Anything else I didn't think of?

All help will be much appreciated.

I'd be going a little deeper and trying to figure out what I needed to do in order to make my total living with the sites.

Incorporate your business in the state where you have resided the most the last few years, then set up a P.O. box and mail forwarding service. If money is tight you don't need the added expense of an 800 number. Just get a cell phone from a national carrier with good nationwide coverage.

Ok my friend. You need to pick a city and state and get a PO Box. Preferably one of those private mail places and they can foward your mail anywhere you are. Think about it, you got an ID from a state - use that state. Your residence will be the PO Box. For tax purposes, you have to pay tax for where ever you work. And your contact will be the PO Box. Keep the 800 number.

You can get a Vonage 800 number, which will ring wherever you plug your IP adapter in. No phone lines to move or have forwarded. You can also have a regular toll number on the same IP adaptor as well.

If you move to a DIFFERENT state every 3 months, I really cannot see how any ONE of them could claim you owe them taxes. You could incorporate in Nevada, they have companies that forward your mail, and provide an address (actually, you rent one square foot where you hang your business license). Most people cannot get away with this, as they stay in one state more than 6 months, incurring a tax liability for that state.

The wonderful thing about working on the web is that you can work from any place with a broadband connection. Your phone can be VOIP so you can take it with you wherever you and plug it in when you arrive. I agree that you need to have at least a post office box address, or a private mail box address that will forward mail to your current location,
or you could hire an accounting firm that would pickup mail and deposit checks you may recieve, if you can afford it.

You may as well pick the state you'd eventually like to settle down in, as your 'home state' and pay their taxes. This will simplify things a lot for you. Otherwise, keep working on your sites and improving them, and eventually you can kiss your "moving every three months job", goodbye

You have to be careful because different states define residency in different ways. The typical situation is residency in one state while being employed in another, or you have moved (once) from one jurisdiction to another (so part of your income gets taxed in the juridiction you moved from, the new locale taxes income earned since the move).

Your best bet would probably be to set up a domicile (different concept from residency) in a non-income tax state, form an LLC there, file the LLC return with that state which 'passes through' to your personal returns.

The toll free number can stay the same, you can forward it to any number that you want to (highly recommended), the address is your call, if you put it on your website and your return is challenged it will be difficult to say that you didn't have a presence in the state with respect to the business.

For banking, definitely use Bank of America.

A lot of good information here, and setting up an LLC is pretty straightforward in most states. In the current climate, my biggest concern about relocating every three months would be showing up on a DEA or Homeland Security watch list.

More importantly than your displayed contact information, don't forget about the contact information for your domain names. That information should always be kept current, as incorrect contact info in your registration could end up with losing the domain.

So my advice is, until you have a permanent PO Box you could use, be sure to update your domain registrar (admin, technical, etc.) every time your contact info changes.
