Accountability on the internet?

Look up "whitehouse" on Google.

Great! Just what my 6 year old was looking for.

whitehouse.gov is #1

With the added bonus of a nice assortment of sponsored porn links. Not to mention that many of these sponsored links contain malicious links and code.

Yeah, one of the pitfalls of the net. I remember a few years back when my daughter did a search on Spice Girls, the 'xxxx' sites that came up with that! It took 2 pages before we got to anything on the pop group.

Default whitehouse.* brings many choices

Well, this all has to do with the *.com, *.net, *.gov, *.org, and so forth ability to register the same primary name with an alternate dot ending. It's been a well-known wry smile for some time that whitehouse.gov brings one to the official government website; whitehouse.com is a major porn site; whitehouse.net is own by a supporter of JWB; and whitehouse.org is parody site with some fairly funny articles lampooning government and the White House. I wasn't surprised to find that a search on whitehouse would bring back a fair amount of XXX hits -- there IS a major porn website with that name, which was registered in 1997.

In fact, a whois lookup reveals that only *.us is still unregistered; so, hurry, hurry, step right up and buy the rights to whitehouse.us.

Default Point Missed

Maybe I didn't clarify enough. The concern is not the specific search results, but the advertising Google presents with the results.
