Hi Tiffany,
our colleagues are right, it is not easy to do such market research, but it is not impossible either.
You can pursue different ways to gage the market. One is purchase the information:
- I'd guess that Forrester Research, etc. have some study about the forecasted Internet Market and markets for WEB-Design and Tools.
- You can gage the current market, by looking at industry information for purchase. If your company is willing to buy the addresses of web designers from a company like InfoUSA, than you can add up the revenue of all companies and so approximate the current market size. Growth is another matter!
You can also purchase market publications that give you all kinds of financial figures in different industries. I'm not sure if web design is regarded as an industry of it's own.
Those publications can usually be used at a good public library. A city like Washington DC may have a special business library (
like Boston has). Another option might be the library of a business school in your area. Go there, contact the librarian and tell her/him what you are looking for. They can help you!
They can also help you to find a list of trade organizations (national and local), that are relevant to the industry you are looking for. Contact the trade organizations. They usually collect information regarding their member firms and this allows you to estimate the market size and growth rates.
The chamber of commerce (locally and by state or nationally) can also be a source of information. They might have figures about how many companies of what size have or have not a web page and what they are planning to invest into it over the next 12/24 month.
I hope this gives you some pointers. It is hard work to find this kind of specific information.
