Internet also called the information super high way, is only a narrow old road compared to the new internet2, http://www.internet2.edu/ that is led by more than 200 U.S. universities, working with industry and government. This scalable, next generation networks combines the best of packet and optical technologies. What is happening on this network, is hidden to the usual internet user. So it is in a sense another part of the invisible net, http://www.invisible-web.net/ .
Internet2 is limited to a selected few and is much faster and moves data 100 to 1000 times faster than the ordinary Internet and it is claimed that a DVD-quality copy of the popular movie, The Matrix was downloaded in 30 seconds. This new super fast (as of today) network opens new options, solutions and possibilities, among other things for search engines and "live face to face communication". Spiders will crawl this net faster, updating and replication of the index and archive will take place at a faster pace. "Internet2 is a consortium being led by 207 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet". http://www.internet2.edu/about/ Digital advertising and branding will, climb to a new level, where ad via internet and ordinary television will converge. If you are a teacher of music, you may sit in New York, playing your piano and train a class in South Africa. In todays internet, there are a lot of bottlenecks, and as capacity increases, some are removed and new introduced. As long as there is a lag between clicking on an object and what you see on your screen, there are incentives to increase capacity. This superfast net is currently restricted to the USA that has the necessary infrastructure. Ok, so if I can download a DVD quality copy of The Matrix in 30 seconds, I'll need a RAID array of about 50 drives minimum to keep up with the data flow. This is cool. Rather useless until PC's catch up, but still cool.
Even with my 4 10,000 RPM drives in RAID on my system now, copying a 1GB file takes a few minutes without involving a network. I can't wait until PC's can keep up with internet2, because that means programs can almost open before I've let off of the mouse button. I'm looking forward to everything on the way. Bleeding edge... that's me! Brian.
