Default Apple to start using Intel chips

Dorks, geeks, nerds and dweebs alike were all buzzing on Monday when Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs announced a gradual transition to Intel chips beginning June, 2006. The low-end models will be the first to make the move, with the high-end machines shipping with Intel processors by the end of 2007.

What does this mean to the hordes of Mac maniacs that refer to Intel as 1/2 of the "Axis of Evil?" According to Macworld editor, Jason Snell, not as much as you might think. There is already a way to run PowerPC-compiled apps on intel machines, creating intel apps to run on OS X will be much easier than making PowerPC apps, and beyond that, we survived a huge transition to the PowerPC chip from the 680x0 several years ago.

The biggest concern is the public perception that Apple is either going to fold, or be another PC manufacturer. Popular publications like to call for the demise of Apple like blue-staters like to call red staters "Hicks". Apple has a huge task at hand to waive off those beliefs and drive home that this is actually going to be GOOD.

Because of this move, you can see Macs get cheaper, software to be more plentiful, and significant speed bumps at regular intervals.

Just one dork's opinion.

A die-hard Mac fan, a friend of mine (a former boss), was laughing hysterically one day after showing me what he printed out -- an MSN ad that showed a picture of a person using what he could identify as actually a Mac laptop. He informed his Mac-colleagues and soon their community was buzzing about it.

I'm almost afraid to contact him and ask him what he thinks of Intel processors going into Apple products. It may not be pretty.

As for me, I'm all for the idea of Macs getting cheaper and software more plentiful if there weren't any sacrifice in performance. Historically, I've used Mac and love it. But as another friend of mine stated (as he was debating the first), "Macs are only the most secure because even hackers don't support Mac..." lol I dunno if that's true or not.

But I'm all for seeing more Mac products on the shelves to choose from. lol Just another dork's opinion. :)

As one writer put it, "The sky is not falling, but it is definately a different color this morning."

I don't think that there will be a big performance difference. About a year ago a Mac magazine (can't remember which one), did a side-by-side test of a Dual G5 and a Dual Pentium machine. They were decked out with VERY similar hardware (RAM, HD, video cards, etc.) and then tested in Photoshop. The scores were nearly identical, but the retail price of the Mac was about $1200 less.

Default MAC Virus Report

I've never been a MAC user, but certainly I will admit to being in awe of their power, capabilities and security.

To date, the number of successful viruses written and executed for a MAC is ... ZERO.

Also, the best graphics in the world that you see on the big screen, many television commercials, print ad and more come from Apple/Mac.

As far as the transition to Intel, I think it's a sound decision. If IBM doesn't want to play nice, fine - throw 'em out of the playground.

They may lose face with some current users, but Steve Jobs is no dummy - he's looking forward, not at yesterday or today, but years down the road.

I have escaped proprietetary software once.

Mac's are better than popular atleriative but.

Why go to proprietetary software tied to proprietetary hardware.
