The ODP directory is human edited by category. Not sure what you mean by updating. No recent pod feeds to other engines like Google in the last month or so, maybe, but otherwise not so sure what you suggest is correct. I made several updates to one of my categories last week and the edits are open to the public. All the feeds value the DMOZ information because it is highly scrutinized for accuracy and matches the category it is placed in. If a link submission is not valid it is ideally moved to a category where it is better classified. If it offers no relevancy for any category it may be discarded or a new category may be created. This is done by human decision and no other search engine offers this kind of intensive verification. There is value in accuracy for the engines. That's what brings visitors and popularity.

woosh - you missed the point. I made edits and they are available. That means some edits are getting updated! Another point it's too valuable a resource to do away with. Tell me about the speculation in the next couple weeks - after the pod feed.
