Getting In Eurekster

The Eurekster search engine launched recently with fanfare on all the search industry sites and a big article in Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Watch.

The buzz surrounds Eurekster's method of delivering personalized search results. The whole concept revolves around groups of searchers - you and your office staff, for example. You and your team of search optimizers (that's what you do, right?) all join the same group on Eurekster.

You search for "search optimization techniques" and click on the top link, searchengineforums.com. If the next time one of your team members searches for search optimization information and this site shows up in the results, there will be a little "e" next to that result to show that someone clicked it before. That site will also show up higher in the results.

The idea is that this will help raise the relevance of results for specific groups of people.

I think they should also have a little place where people can record notes about a site they've visited in case they think it's a bad site. The "e" shows up whether the site has good content or not.

What Eurekster Delivers. Since Eurekster's the big thing right now I thought it would be a good idea to learn about getting listed in their results.

You might be there already. First you should search to see if you're already there or not. "IEntry" is, and that term delivers 247962. Since Google delivers 265,000 results for "iEntry," this leads me to belive that if you're in Google you'll be in Eurekster too.

Check on this and post here to expand or set me straight.

Eurekster delivers alltheweb. Danny's article says that they're delivering alltheweb results, and according to Bruce Clay's search engine relationship chart Fast powers alltheweb.

Getting in Eurekster. I spoke with Jim Hedger of StepForth yesterday and he said that the best way to get in Fast is through lycos.

If Eurekster blows up, and it looks like it will, you need to get your site in their listings.

Just went in now and typed in "ergonomic chair" - which gave 319,800 results and brought me up at #1 in their results. Google shows 225,000 for the same term and lists me at #3.

A second search on "computer chair" brought up a no. #3 result at Eurekster among 5,705000, but a no. #2 for Google among 5,700000.

Congratulations to their search boffins! :)

My "feeling" is that they are drawing from Inktomi and Fast as well as(?) Google results.

Should get plenty of "Groups" clicking on their oun links to get the top listing.

Trouble is this will not be genuine visitors.

Eurekster for "baby quilts" put us at number 7.
Google we are above #100 somewhere.
Yahoo #4 now that they droped Google, up from #300 when they used Google.

So I wonder if they are using Google.

hhmm.. this 'Eurekster' has yet to even pick us up. We are in googly, yehaa and the rest . Wonder if their bots are new or used or borrowed pre updated googly logarithm . we'll just have to see what happens when the beta falls off the end of the logo.

Our site is #1 in a lot of our popular search terms.

Looks very much like Alta Vista, which of course is FAST results now.

That's my best guess.

The search terms I found best suited to what my customers were looking for are "indiana wedding djs" "indiana wedding dj" "indiana prom dj" and "indiana prom djs". With all of these, I have #1 placement on google, yahoo, excite and now eurekster. I have not checked the any of the other major search engines recently. For anyone who view my site, I added the meta tags yesterday, but search engine placement was established about a month ago and has been maintained. I have never paid for search engine submission, or advertisements. I have relied on free links available on sites that cater to clients who might also be searching for a DJ, keyword placement in the body of the index page and page titles. That's it. The most influential change I made was to the wording of the 1st paragraph of the index page body text.

I spent several hours on this one. It does not matter if you try to adjust your ranking by clicking(voting) for it as these refined results apparently will only appear on 'your own' search or 'your friends' search. Takes a few reads to get this principal. So what everyone else sees is the basic positions of Alltheweb/Fast, if that is who they are using.
The basic problem still exists that irrelevant sites can get high positions and value sites with real content get a low position. The big search problem now is actually finding a site that answers your queirie as opposed to a commercial site selling something that includes your search term.
We hear a lot of talk about brining the Internet and the benefits to all the world, but the fact is $200 may be nothing for a large organisation to spend on Adwords or listinga a site, but in many parts of the world that is a vast amount of money.
I like the layout of Eurekstar, it's clear, nice feel to it, and fast.
I think we need to step outside of the circle to see that when people search they anticipate getting the 'answer' to their enquiry. The search results should not then be the 'start' of another search scrolling through pages to find what you are really looking for.
If the 'average' person needs a Roof repeair in his local town it's a backward step if he can get that clear information in a few flicks of the local printed directoty faster than finding it on a Search Engine ( yes, most places still have printed YP's! ). It's a real downer when someone puts their head around the corner and asks me if I've got a copy of the Singapore Directory and before I can say I can find what they want on the Internet they say 'Don't bother, I think reception has one!'..

The classic example is when someone searches on any major search engine for say a Hotel, they rarely get the website for 'that' hotel, all they will get is the throusands of urls containing that hotel name.

I really hope Eurekster get's it right, someone need to.

I've searched for "chicago website developer" and got very few searches on first page that was relevant at all to what I was looking for. Whereas, in Google, you get much more relevant searches. I am sure it still needs toime to work out the bugs, but I am not so sure how popular this search engine will be.

I hope this do not turn out to be one of those pay only to be listed search engine. GOSH, so much commercialization of everything.

I checked if my site www.pcbequipment.com was already listed on eurekster and it was.
BUT what surprised me was that when i did the search for pcbequipment not only my site showed up at the first position but in their list of recent sites was a link to childporn, how do they explain that. It made me angry enough to never wanting to visit them again.

Looks to me like they are using Alltheweb (FAST) results as the number of pages and rankings for a couple of sites match with ATW.

Nothing wrong with this, WTW has perhaps as big an index as Google, spiders actively and in general has pretty good results.

My only question:

Is there any value in another set of Alltheweb results even if it offers you some kind of personalization?

IMO the preferences of a group may do nothing to provide more relevant results and in fact may do just the opposite.

They have nothing in common with Google... I am all over the front page for 100s of terms and see too few on this search engine... there are even terms I am listed on in Google that have no search results whatsoever...
This is a serious work in progress... but it has potential...
Would not recommend wating too much time on this, bone up on Inktomi... it is going to have far more impact inthe next 6 months

I searched for 'minerals engineering' and my site came up as no.1.

However, the description they had for it was not from my homepage (which was the page which showed up) but for a page deeper in my site.

How strange!

We have high "natural" (non-paid) rankings in our various theatre of KWs, on Google and most other popular engines.

We also use Overture PPC, which has always paid off. Overture is listed as the top three results in Eurekster...so my question to all the Overture customers, why bother spending time with Eurekster if you use Overture and have good "non-paid" listings globally?

Just checked to see if we were in Eureksters listings. I used "small home appliances", which on Google listed us at #1 out of 3,190,000. On Eurekster we were #1 out of 2,584,608. To double checked, I tried "major kitchen appliances", and we were #1 there as well on both engines.
