Default Is Yahoo’s Directory Worth Submitting To?

There are numerous reasons for webmasters to submit their sites to various web directories populating the Internet. The positives of having your site listed in a popular directory have been discussed in previous articles and on a multitude of search-related forums.

Being listed in a popular directory benefits your site’s popularity and may directly impact a site’s SERP position. However, is it worth $299 (minimum) to have your site listed in Yahoo’s web directory? That depends on who you ask.

According to Yahoo’s page for directory listing information, sites without adult content are required to pay $299. With your investment in hand, Yahoo then, “provides expedited review of web sites you submit for possible inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory. We will respond to your request within 7 business days.” Sites that contain adult content are charged $600 for possible inclusion.

Keep in mind that these fees are recurring. If you’ve paid to be in Yahoo’s directory, you must continue to pay; provided you want to maintain whatever benefit being listed in their directory gives you. Also remember Yahoo’s policy concerning paid submissions:

“Use of the Yahoo! Express program does not ensure that your submission will be accepted for inclusion in the Yahoo! Directory. Final judgment on the suitability, placement, and description of all sites submitted to Yahoo! is solely the responsibility of the Yahoo! directory team.”

Also, being listed in Yahoo’s directory in no way guarantees a Yahoo Search listing improvement. From the Yahoo Express Help page: “A listing in the Yahoo! Directory does not guarantee your site will be listed in search results for any particular query.”

With these stipulations in mind, I return to the original point of this article: Is paying for submission to Yahoo’s directory worth the money? Some support it; some do not.

One popular question concerning Yahoo Express is “How will being listed in Yahoo’s directory benefit my Google ranking?” This question stems from a growing belief that Google may not value directory listings as much as they used to. Anthony Parsons gives a concise response to those doubting directory listings, “Whether Google has dropped weight from directories or not is irrelevant really, as the link is still counted and still from a unique IP… you ARE going to benefit regardless.”

The question was brought up on WebProWorld’s forum as well. A poster asked “I am thinking of listing of my website on the Yahoo directory for their express fee of $300. My question: is it worth it or not?” As expected, responses were mixed. Bill Hartzer answered pragmatically, saying if your competitors were there, you should be too. According to Bill, “Yes, it's definitely worth it. Forget about the PageRank benefit, PR doesn't mean much nowadays. Rather, it's the on-topic link from a very reputable, powerful site that counts.” Which is an excellent point when talking about SERP positioning. Most, if not all, search engines place a high value on relevant links pointing to a site.

Of course, there are opposing views also. The majority of them have a hard time justifying the recurring price. Their counter point involves a number of directories that require no payment for submission consideration (DMOZ, BlueFind, Zeal, Jayde, and so on). David Wallace, SEW forum moderator, had these thoughts: “I don't even submit paid listings anymore. There are so many other directories out there now that will help to build your link popularity, some for free and others for a lot cheaper than $299 a year.”

However, the consensus seems to be that there is some value from a Yahoo directory listing. In a long discussion at the ihelpyou forums, Doug Heil, administrator of ihelpyou, says, “A Yahoo directory listing helps with the Yahoo search engine visibility. That by itself makes the 300 bucks worth it.” Just be prepared to pay a recurring $300/600.

That says it all... No 100% guarantee....

Sites who make good income are the only ones that could afford to.

I mean, who would pay $299 a year just to be (possibly) rejected?

I am not sure why anyone would pay. My site shows up in Yahoo number one for my keywords. And I never paid for inclusion. I can't imagine with a good design, SEO, and key word density, Yahoo wouldn't pick up the site.

Hi CRich

I took a look at the mentioned bluefind you spoke off above. bluefind.com was where I looked.

They appear to be charging.
Was I looking at the wrong site, were you simply a touch out of date, or is there a free entry page hidden somewhere?

Cheers

Mick

There is no need to pay for inclusion in Yahoo. I'm a designer, not an SEO, but when I've done a content optimization and submitted through their free submition they have all not only been indexed but ranked well. It may take a month or three, but they get to you eventually.

I believe Yahoo crawls every 7 or 8 weeks and never indexes a free submital site on it's first crawl.

Free submitals do require a yahoo username and password.

By the way, it's not $299 per year. It's a one time payment to avoid that month or three wait. Your site will be indexed according to their normal algo. Depending on how much of a hurry you are in this may well be worth your while. Once you are indexed you will not be removed for failure to pay an annual fee. If you have good, dynamic content the your rank will rise, if not it will fall. This is going to happen whether you paid for accellerated submission or not.

Your site will not be rejected if it's a good site, but yahoo quite rightly reserves the right not to index schwag, even if it's a paid submital.

It is definately worth doing. Google is 70% of your visits, sure. But do you not want Yahoos 20%? That traffic would include me, btw. I've beome very disenchanted with Googles results in the last few months and now search primarilly through Yahoo. I think the results are better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't BlueFind another paid submission directory?

yahoo may be worth it just because they get a lot of traffic, but i guess it depends on the category you get listed in.

Personally I'd be happier spending my money on some of the smaller directories that offer clean html links.

There's a lists of good directories for spiderable links at:
http://www.platinax.co.uk/webmasters/articles/6/
http://www.isedb.com/
http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php

For $300 you could get express reviewed in a few of the smaller directories and some directories like (shameless self promotion) yeandi usually refund your submittal if you're not listed :)

You are confused between the Yahoo Directory (which this thread is about) and the Yahoo Search Index.... this is misleading to readers of the thread.

The Yahoo Directory is $299 yr (if you do not qualify for a free listing, which most sites do not, and want to be listed). The Yahoo Search Index is free (unless you want to pay for the guaranteed crawling etc). The free submission link you provided is for the Search Index and NOT the Directory. The link Chris just provided about free listing being a rarity is for the Directory.

I'd like to see that. What's the URL for the directory, or is it something I'll find on my yahoo homepage?

The Yahoo Directory is here: http://dir.yahoo.com/

Here is the link to the information on submitting to the Yahoo Directory:
https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/express/intro/

The link you provided above for free submission was for the Yahoo Search Index (which is not what this thread is about).

For the free submission option to the Directory, drill down in the Directory to a category and click on <suggest a site> .... the free option for non-profit sites comes up on the left. As the thread Chris linked at SEW discuss's, it is rare to get a free listing these days in the Directory but not the Index

Hmmn. I've reviewed the directory. Is there anybody out there on it? What kind of referer numbers do you get?

I've seen this directory on my yahoo home page. I gotta tell ya 300 bucks doesn't seem nearly that much. I have a vertical index (payed on Google, Yahoo, and MSN) and I get $95 a year just for listings in that. People pay it, though, year after year, because it brings them prospects, and I don't offer nearly this much exposure.

Default yahoo listing

Come on Chris, let's answer the question already. No offense but what did you offer the readers of your article with the following lines - you are very good at asking the question - but you fail at answering it - I'm just pointing out the fact that you asked a question and didn't answer it (what's the purpose?):

1. "...is it worth $299 (minimum) to have your site listed in Yahoo's web directory? That depends on who you ask"

2. "...I return to the original point of this article: Is paying for submission to Yahoo's directory worth the money? Some support it; some do not. "

3. "...I am thinking of listing of my website on the Yahoo directory for their express fee of $300. My question: is it worth it or not?" As expected, responses were mixed. Bill Hartzer answered pragmatically, saying if your competitors were there, you should be too."

4. "...Of course, there are opposing views also. The majority of them have a hard time justifying the recurring price."

5. "...However, the consensus seems to be that there is some value from a Yahoo directory listing. "

You ask a legitimate a question over and over, you write an article about it - and you give away the answer without even picking up on it - let's get straight to the point. Is it worth it to list with yahoo? The answer is - yes for some people and no for others. The answer is yes for those that can earn back $300+ in 365 days and no for those who can't earn back $300+ in 365 days. That might sound like a dumb answer - but the fact of the matter is that it's a crapshoot. Website owners must know the following to see if the odds are in their favor (and these are only a small fraction of the answers they should know - but I'm not hear trying to answer the question):

1. Where will my site list alphabetically in the category? If you don't know the answer to this question then don't bother listing with yahoo.

2. What is my current clickthru ratio on my current advertising plans and what percentage of clickthru's lead to a sale

3. How many products do I need to sell in order to pay the yahoo fee before I start making a profit - is this worth the effort? For those selling cars who make a few thousand dollars per sale - the answer is 'Hell Yeah I need to be on Yahoo'. For those selling peanuts and flower baskets the answer might be 'Hell No I ain't making 150 baskets ($2 profit per order) before I start making a profit. etc. etc.

I personally guarantee if you follow this strategy -> "Bill Hartzer answered pragmatically, saying if your competitors were there, you should be too" that you will fail. If your competitors are advertising somewhere it's very possible that the rates to advertise are (if your paying per click) are already cutting too far into your profits... and it's very possible that the directory your competitors are in is overpopulated and the hits are too sparse - but again - every site needs to be considered separately.

As an FYI - I have several dozen sites listed in yahoo, some for free (*** see comment below) some were worth it - some weren't ... some are listed low alphabetically - some are listed high - some listings were manually edited by the editors because they 'thought' they knew what the best description was for my site (go figure!!!) so theres not even a guarantee that your listing will appear as you want!

*** you failed to mention - yes there are backdoors to getting your site listed in related categories - you just need to be crafty and that's another article) ***

The bottom line - it does come down to value - will you earn $300 back annually - and is the effort you put into it worth it? you were so close and figuring this out but you didn't -- and I know I didn't answer the question 100% but that wasn't my objective.

you can see a related article at http://buildacom.com/articles.php

Thanks,
Brendan

Brendan ... Welcome to WPW....

I know forum rules say something like "don't bring a poster's site into the dicsussion unless relevant" ... this is not relevant, but in the link you provided you might want to correct the typo in the page heading:

Chris,
You can argue this either way whether or not you answered the question ... and I don't mean to attack the article in anyway - you are obviously a talented writer.

I got a little excited when I saw the title of the article - and I found myself a little dissapointed after reading it .. As I read the article - up until the last word - I was hoping I would find the answer - or a bit of valuable information that I could relate to. The fact is - listing pro's and con's does not answer the question in this case. Specific cases and real world examples are needed to give users something to compare to. Readers need something to measure in order to make an educated decision - thats all. Here's an unnecessary (yet simple) comparison.... compare your article to:

Should I buy a corvette?
article facts - some say it's worth it, some say it's not
pros: it's fast, it's sporty
cons: it's expensive, only a 2 seater

-my reponse would be:
Are you single? How many kids in your family? Can you afford it? Is it your first and only car? Can you afford to pay 30% more for a gas guzzler? Would a station wagon or sedan be more practical? blah blah blah .. questions that make people think, not pro's & cons that don't make people think... anyway ... please take this as constructive criticism .. I simply didn't find what i was looking for... and I'm bored on a thursday night with nothing better to do.. :)

Thanks cbp .. I wrote that a long time ago with the intention of putting several related articles together .. actually I was planning on writing an article with almost the exact same title 'Is Yahoo’s Directory Worth Submitting To?' -primarily because I felt I got burnt by yahoo after they changed my description and title in the listing-- but I never got that far - never published a thing - never even looked back after writing this 1st article... but the topic does still spark my interest which is the reason for my long reply
.. thanks again - I fixed the typo.. :)

Default Re: Is Yahoo’s Directory Worth Submitting To?

my attempt was to present what seemed like valid arguments from both sides and let people come to their own decision.

like pedstersplanet said, $299 is a nice sum when inclusion isn't a given. if you are a smaller business, there are other free or less expensive directories available.

i was purposely non-committal so i wouldn't be seen as showing a bias for or against. there is a definite value to being in yahoo's directory, but it may not be for all.

judging from your reaction to my vacillation, i succeeded in my goal. :)
