Just recently read a posting on here about editors charging on DMOZ. Long story short I gave up on it figuring there is a system of people trying to charge that control categories. Not that I wouldn't pay, but please if you are going to be charging for a service make it accessable for us all to bribe the system.

Glad to see I'm not alone, yet sad to see there are so many other former DMOZ editors who got tired of the BS. DMOZ could have been something great - but like anything else that allows humans to become involved, it gets twisted and biased. I was an editor way-back-when it was pretty much a new thing - had a friend who was an editor get me into a category... seeing everyone abuse his/her categories just got to be too much. I couldn't get away from it fast enough.

Maybe it is Time for another 'Open' Directory
Maybe some group of people should just start another.
Maybe a human AND a crawler with GNU code?

This is actually a good idea. I rememebr a few years back, some startup tried this method. I don't think it worked out because I can't remember the name, but I am sure someone will!
This is a good idea... Auto crawl & recrawl with mod interaction to get it listed... Good idea. I think someone will run with this!

re: DMOZ Is A Pile
I have a nice little DMOZ story. Like many of you, I have been trying to get several of my websites listed in the directory to no avail. We're talking months and years folks. They never respond to any of the submissions or give me any feedback. So I begin to surmise that there are simply no captains at the helm.
Recently, I tried a different tact. I applied to become a DMOZ editor/censor/whatever. First of all, their application is pretty intense for a voluntary position. Second, I was expecting to suffer from the same bureaucratic nightmare that my sites have suffered from. But I completed the form and volunteered.
Much to my surprise, I received a reply to my editor submission in less than 8 hours!! I no longer have the e-mail they sent back to me (wish I did, I would post it here), but they essentially said that my services were not needed because they had all of the categories covered. Essentially, DMOZ rejected my application because they are properly staffed?!?! LOL!
Now their site's down??? HAHAHA! Good riddance to that circus! I could care less if they are currently being DSA'd into oblivion...

Sounds like what Google is planning to do on their next facelift...

DMOZ is dead?
OMG when did DMOZ die? What's going on? How could they let such a huge place die?

DMOZ is still messed up. Links to "Suggest URL" take me to a 404 page as do many of the other links. Oddly enough, I just happened to click on a link in the category I was hoping to submit to and the page came up "Under construction" so I clicked another link and it came up as "404". The next one came back as one of those spam search pages that dynamically post Google AdSense NonSense ads depending on what you are searching for. DMOZ is gone. Wish I had not wasted two years of my time fretting over why they would not list my site.

Does anyone know when it will be back up? Or is it really down forever. Since it is the Google Business Directory, it is a pretty serious situation.

Google is okay without DMOZ...
1. Don't worry about Google without DMOZ, I think they'll do okay.
2. From what I can see, they appear to be back up and running as a directory, their site submission and editor backend doesn't appear to be up.

It seems like it is a barrier to entry for new sites if they are not in the DMOZ since Google seems to score sites in the directory better.

Concern yourself with quality vs. DMOZ
I would concern yourself with building a high quality site and you'll do just fine.
With good content, good IBL counts, and ever changing content, your site will get noticed in Google very quickly, and move up in the listings nicely.

I submitted once, and then waited one year --- nothing. I resubmitted, waited another year, and still nothing. I waited again for another year, submitted, and nothing happened. I gave up.
Then I did a favor for someone who many consider to be one of my competitors. He returned the favor by adding my listing when he added his own. One week later, I was in dmoz for the very first time.

I have had the same experiences. Submit and nothing happens.
I would still pay to get in if I knew it would work.
