Default In need of new host

Hi,
I have a sensitive situation. My host has done a migration. In migrating my site 2 nights ago, my database is no longer working. I have been on the phone with them several times. Supposedly the problem was fixed (it wasn't). Now they say the Frontpage extensions were corrupted during the migration so they will have to reinstall them. I'll have to republish my site which is no big deal. The problem is I'm having surgery early Friday morning so I'm panicked this matter won't be resolved before then. I'm getting the run around which has never happened before. The host I have now is EasyCGI.

Does anyone have suggestions on a new host that I could publish my site to ASAP? I really don't want to change but I'm not sure I have a choice.

I use Frontpage and .asp.

Thanks! Nicci

Nicci...

First, I hope all goes well with your surgery.

Try and contact the folks at Lexiconn.com if you you like. For me, they have been nothing short of stellar. Not inexpensive but their support, uptime and technical assistance can't be rivaled IMO and well worth every penny.

I had similar problems with Hostway, and lots of others. Try Shared Web Hosting provider - Multi Domain Hosting - PHP Web Hosting - Web Site Hosting - Web Hosting Service - Multiple Domain Hosting - Reseller Hosting - Blog Hosting - Downtown Host LLC - good guys there.

I Use hosteasier - excellent service and very good price
Also, Blacknight.ie is very good and I know that Hotel Kilkenny, Kilkenny Hotels, Mount Juliet Hotel in Kilkenny, Golf Hotel Breaks Kilkenny , one of Ireland best golf courses, use this server and I have to say very impressive hosting too!

Hope you get it resolved soon

You can switch to another web host with FP and asp however you will still need to face some downtime as DNS propogation takes time.

Good luck with your surgery. We have used and recommended Hostasaurus for the last 10 years. In my opinion when you buy hosting you buy support because you never worry about your hosting until you have an issue. They are excellent.

I use 1and1.com for most of my clients and they've always been very helpful. No matter who you go with, however, it might take time to transfer the site.

Hostgator saved me from a flaky host two years ago... and they will actually import you site from it's current host to their servers at no charge.

Plus, their technical support is great!

Check them out.

Hostgator is a decent company.

But for any high profile/serious site, I would recommend not going with them or GoDaddy

I am surprised everyone is sending you down the same road your just coming from.

Hosts are notorious for screwing people. They literally have no interest in maintaining your site or helping you out. It is the equivalent to living in a rented storage space with no plumbing or electricity.

If you mean business. Find someone who can support your technicals regardless of where the website is being hosted.

I've been through a countless number of hosts. So many I have built software to make migrations from one to the next easier. Would you believe when I was starting out I lost m website for three weeks straight due to a "hurricane".

All last year I was in a continual battle with a host to keep software updated and patched with rapid fire upgrades from a host who failed to provide any sort of notice.

Last week a client was instructed by another host ( very established - in fact they are mentioned in this thread ) to change nameservers to a DNS server which failed to serve the domain causing lengthy outages. The lists of problems and the years which have been shaved off my life are substantial.

Hosts are evil. Find a support team. A Developer, a Designer, whatever you need to keep the technicals from ruining your business. Whoever can keep your site up regardless of what the hosting company decides to do or where the site is hosted. Jmo...

However if you choose to go with a "host" again. 24 hour support is the only thing that matters. You could get lucky and find a host that works for you.

Hi Nicci,

Hostgator wold be an option but currently they do not support .asp. And I agree that there support is good. I am from the UK and have had answers within hours and it has been spot on advice.

I use them but they are very much Linux hosts, windows coming soon?

Even GoDaddy will only offer .asp on windows servers so you could try the GoDaddy Windows hosting at http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.asp?isc=gdbb15&ci=9009, and I understand that they are quite good, although like a lot of hosts they are using an automated help centre. Saying that support has been slowish (they do hav lots of people to deal with) but has also been good when received.

Saying that, they have responded fairly quickly when I have had a problem.

I think the only thing that you need to think about for hosting is reliability, how long has the company been going and does it work!

I have had very good luck with webmasters.com and hostmysite.com, and mostly good luck with kualo.com. I do not recommend hostdepartment.com to my worst enemies. Shop around, search the host name on Google for reviews and try to find one with a support number on their page. Call the number and see if someone answers. If they are reputable and worth your money at all they will have staff on hand, hopefully not outsourced. Good luck!

Applied Innovations

ASP.net hosting, ASP.net 2.0 host, ASP hosting, MSSQL2005 hosting, shared hosting plans, Microsoft Windows 2003 e-business solutions - Applied Innovations

They have excellent customer service! I have been with them for 10 yrs and I have 10 yrs of positive feedback.

They are not the cheapest, but they are reasonable, and you get what you pay for.

Call them at (866) 706-8691 and talk to them. Depending on your traffic and bandwidth needs, they can set you up with something that will work for you. Their VS-3 plan is a pretty good shared server plan, but if you have a lot of traffic, you may want to go with one of the dedicated servers. Or if you don't need that now, you can always upgrade to that later as your business grows.

I have been using Welcome to DailyRazor Web Hosting - Advanced Java Hosting, JSP Hosting, Servlets, ASP.NET, ASP 3.0, PHP Hosting, Ruby Hosting, Ruby on Rails Hosting, Rails Hosting, VPS Hosting, VDS Hosting, Ecommerce Hosting, Small Business Hosting for years without a hitch. They offer asp, php, cfm, frontpage, whatever you need for about $5 a month. I bought the coldfusion biggest package and host about 40 websites from it with the option for over 100 more for the same rate. You can get phone service if you need it but I shoot off an email with my question via their site and they answer within 30 minutes with a solution. The email is reliable as well

As far as propagation, I use godaddy for the domain name and when I change DNS I am ready within 3 minutes.

Good luck to you.

Hi Nicci,

All the best tomorrow with your surgery.

Do you have the option of a close friend or even someone you know in the web community that you can trust to take up your cause with your host provider in ensuring that everything gets up and running asap?

The other option would be hiring someone, I'm sure that there's many professional designers out here that would be able to help you out...

I've been using bluehost.com and they work very well. I formerly used GoDaddy, but I have been very turned off by their raunchy advertising methods so I took my business elsewhere.

Hope your surgery goes smoothly - when I had some I asked the surgeon to promise that he and his helpers would make only positive remarks within earshot, including ones to the effect that my recovery was bound to be speedy and total, despite my being under anaesthetic and supposedly unable to hear. He was surprised but agreed to it and my recovery was speedy and total...

I have been using www.gold-domain.com for years and am very happy with them and, after similar problems to yours with a host who must remain nameless as some of my sites are still with them, I put subsequent FrontPage sites with www.3ix.com. 3iX provides reliable, cheap web hosting - smaller ones (10GB space & 20GB monthly bandwidth )at $21.60 for 2 years and a much larger one that takes 5 sites (90GB space & Unlimited bandwidth) at $55 a year. They have been, so far, a model of efficiency and prompt service and I'm really happy to have found them.

You might try shunting the whole site over to wherever you decide to go via FTP and then publishing to the site to repair anything that needs it. It saves a whole pile of time. Best of luck.

Whichever hosting company you decide to go with, make sure they offer both Windows hosting and Linux hosting, in case you'll ever need to switch platforms in the future. Better to be able to switch platforms than need to look for a hosting company again from scratch.

Not to be disrespectful, but I don't think much of GoDaddy. I needed hosting and database set up for a course I was teaching for up to 12 adult students. Their interface is incredibly obtuse, their technical support doesn't have a clue what you are asking, and I had to cancel one day of the course to get things working right. My students were incredibly patient (I'm surprised they didn't ask for their $$$ back,) but they did receive a great lesson on the problems with web hosts, especially, why they shouldn't use GoDaddy!

I've never been too happy with GoDaddy. I have clients that host with them, but it seems more convoluted than it should be. Ironically a GoDaddy commercial came on ESPN, just as I was writing this. It does seem as if all of their attention is on women. But that isn't something we should complain about I guess.
