Exclamation New type of hosting scam

We all know that scammers got everywhere, in the hosting industry as well.

But recently I faced a new type of hosting scam that - in my understanding of it - is a lot more advanced and technologically elegant. This type of scam is allowing the cheaters to stay on the hosting market for a very long time (even years) and keep cheating the clients.

I will not name or hint any companies, so that it does not look that I am trying to vent off, but I think that anyone who looks for the hosting should know how the web host cheaters do that today.

Please read my article Hosting Rip Off Guide - Learn How Smart Host Scam is Working Today and share your experience.

Have you been part of it?

Nothing new, its been going on for years. It is called overselling. It is based on the premise that a client will never actually use the resources allotted to them and if they do they pull up an obscure terms of service paragraph that allows them to either a) throttle the sites bandwidth or b) discontinue hosting the client.

When you see a host offering 200gb of disk space and 2000gb of bandwidth for $5 a month then that should raise a red flag.

The best advice I can give anyone is to check out the prices of dedicated servers at the likes of theplanet.com layeredtech.com as these are the budget server providers. If a webhost offers you same resources as a dedicated server that costs $99/month for $5/month its not a great deal

webhostingtalk.com is a good forum for doing research on a host.

Thanks for the feedback and advice, Easywebdev.

It is perhaps the only way to make sure that the hosting is good via the reputable web hosting forums and what people are saying.

I also agree that the combination of price vs technical parameters is a viable factor, but they can lure people in saying "this is just for the intro part to get more people using our service, those who get it now - will have this price forever, but in a year we'll increase, etc." I know this sounds kinda lame, but there is a way to "explain" why the price is that low.

What is a bottom line for my choices of webhosting (for at least the last year) - is the feedback on the hosting forums - what is the level of support, how quickly they respond to the problem and other details.
