Unhappy Need a new Hosting Provider ASAP!

If this is not the proper place to post this, please feel free to move it to where it should be - thanks!

My hosting provider migrated my site to a new server and sinc 25th May 2008 it has been nothing but trouble! DNS sometimes resolves to the "new" server with the pages I have added & edited and sometimes, the dns goes back to the "old" server where the site continues to reside until it's assured that my pages are ok.

Email is not being received and the MX records are constantly being screwed up. Meanwhile, I am getting uploads without ANY of the form mails that go along with the uploads!

So, how long should I sit back and let this go on? Is it time for me to find new hosting? I am so FED-UP and probably losing visitors and $$

Ohhh............woe is me ..............

Thanks!
Maggie

It sounds as if one of the following is happening here:

a) You created your own nameservers within your domain e.g. ns1.yourdomain.com and in the more they changed the nameserver IPs, in which case you need to check the IP addresses you should be using for the nameservers and update your domain as required.

b) When they moved you to the new server they changed one of the nameservers you should be using, in which case you just need to get the correct nameservers from the host and update you domain name with them.

c) One of their nameservers is out of sync and still serving old data about the server with your site on. When it answers a name lookup visitors will be sent to the old server while when the other nameservers answer they will go to the new server.

Any of the above will cause what you describe and in all cases the host should be able to check and either correct the issue their end or advise you of new settings to apply to the domain name.

Normally a change to DNS should take effect in 48 hours or less and if it's a planned move should be a matter of minutes. So as it was moved on the 25th it should all be sorted out by now.

If you are after recommendations for a new provider you will need to let people know if you want Windows or Linux hosting and the geographic location you want.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll answer as you wrote out;

a) Nope, I have never created my own nameserver entries with my domain name, the nameservers are all named with the provider such as ns1.mysuckyprovider.com

b) The nameserver entries have not changed so there is nothing that I can do to make changes to correct this. Not once was I informed that I need to change any nameservers either - not to mention I was not informed about the move....

c) I am absolutely positive that this is the case. Last night the site reverted back to the pre-move pages and again, everything was lost for a few hours. When I sent in (yet another!) ticket, I was told to "clear my cache in the browser" URGH

Yes, I am looking for a US based hosting company that will provide proper tech support when I call - and realize that I KNOW what I am talking about and not a newbie user!

I just want something that is reliable, responsive and can accomodate a move quickly and easily..... I have approx. 100,000 visitors per day so while I need a good deal of bandwidth, I don't need to be charged for oodles (heh! there's a techie term for ya! ) I need approx 25 GB of storage too.

Linux hosting is preferred as I'm not up to speed on Windows hosting (unless it's pre-year 2001).

Any suggestions or recommendations will be VERY appreciated and helpful!

Thanks so much!
Maggie

In regard to (c) you can query both nameservers and see what each returns, assuming it is different you can show it to the host. If would just confirm it as the problem, if you've not already done so.

I know someone who was using www.jaguarpc.com semi-dedicated plan and last I heard he was quite happy with them, although they don't or didn't at the time do backups so I set up a script for him to once a day send data to www.bqbackup.com.

You might find something suitable over at www.webhostingtalk.com if you don't get any other recommendations here.

Red face Re: Need a new Hosting Provider ASAP!

Hey Maggie,

We have been hosting with Verio.com since 1996. They dropped the ball about 5 years ago, but since NTT (Japan) took them over we haven't looked back.

They have a range of offerings, but with 100,000+ visits per month you would most likely be better off looking at their Managed Server range. These start at 60GB of storage and 1TB of traffic. These are US$350 per month. There are cheaper alternatives, using Virtual Servers, which Verio also offer.

These use either FreeBSD or RedHat.

We are a Gold Reseller with them.

Hey Bigaussie!

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately $350.00 USD per month is WAY out of my price range; I also don't need that much storage or bandwidth. While my site is widly popular, it does not make enough $$$ for me to spend that much! Maybe in the future though... I'll have a peek into Verio as I have heard of them.

Thanks very much for your reply!
Maggie

I usually don't recommend something unless I'm very sure:
