Default Need good web host based in the UK for this website....

Hi all,

I'm the webmaster for photographers gallery bristol, photographic art bristol, image library bristol, picture gallery - I'm sick and tired of dealing with the hosting company and am looking to transfer it to another company. I've got them to transfer the website complete with all php, MySQL coding to a computer disc. Can anyone recommend a good UK based host which is up to the task, and has decent tech support. The total size on disc is 1.1GB. The current host want £700 per annum - is this reasonable?

Warm Regards,

Joel

That price may well be reasonable it all depends on what you are getting and what you are using. Part of the price will be the cost of bandwidth that your site uses and generally with a dynamic site the more traffic you have the more CPU and memory you need to support that traffic.

You also don't state if you are using shared hosting or a dedicated server as the costs between the two will vary quite a bit.

Is that 1.1GB compressed or uncompressed because if it's compressed then the actual space used by your site could be more which again will affect pricing and therefore how reasonable the £700 per year is.

All I can suggest is you make a list of your requirements (disk, bandwidth, support etc) and ask different hosts to quote.

By the way I generally find it easier to pull files directly from the old host using FTP when moving a site as it generally has a much higher throughput than attempting to upload via ADSL, so when you're ready to move I'd suggest you make sure you have FTP access to the current site.
