Default Domain advise - please help

Hi All,

i read somewhere that its best to check that your domain name is in your name instead of the hosting company names. this way its easier to transfer around to other hosts.

The question is:

- where do I get .co.uk and .com domains?
- which hosting company guarantees that?

does bluehost offer that by any chance? as i was looking @ their hosting plan.

any recommendations are welcome.

cheers

J

What you are describing began happening a few years back as the competition in the hosting industry was becoming quite fierce. Hosting companies began giving away free domains included with their hosting plans.

So although the domain was free to the customer, it obviously had a cost attachment to the hoster, so ofcourse they want you to continue hosting with them in order to atleast recoup the domain cost and therefore they would put themselves as the Admin contact in order to prevent their clients from moving to another provider.

Because of that, people are starting to say, that you should register your domains with one company, then host with another.

As a hoster myself, this simply became a "few bad apples ruin the bunch" scenario.

does this mean if i bought my domain through the same host, it would still be registered under my name? or under the company's name? I am thinking of BlueHost as a hosting company in this case.

Why not simply email them and ask them. If they are customer oriented they will get back to you fairly quick. Of course If it takes them a week to answer, this will give you a hint about the service they provide.

There is a ton of choice out there.

That depends on the host.
As I mentioned, a plan that INCLUDES a domain name or a domain name is free, there is a pretty good chance they will put themselves as the Admin contact.

Doesn't that make sense ? If you sign up with them, they register and pay for a domain for you, then 2 days later you cancel and move to another provider. Well they are out of pocket on whatever they paid for the domain.

But as the other poster suggested, contact them and see.

We have a few ex-Bluehost clients, but I cannot remember off-hand if they do this or not

Free domains that come with hosting normally will contract for a year. For my clients in hosting, I will register the domains under their company names or personal names. Depending on packages, some come with free domain names.

It is always better to make things clear before you register any hosting or domain names.

Exclamation Re: Domain advise - please help

As a rule of thumb I never register my domains or clients domains with the same hosting company, I just set the DNS to the host once the hosting account is purchased. It is a pain in the a** should any problem happen in the future, requiring you to move to a new host. A few spam complaints and you could find yourself completely out of business. I have been burnt once and will never be. Unless your business is not worth the 8~9$ a domain name would cost...So I would gladly pass on the free domain that comes with the hosting plan

Your domain is your business. Hosting is important, but you can keep a backup on your computer and if something is wrong with your host, just move on and find another one.
NEVER, BUT NEVER, keep your domain with your host.
For your domain registrar find a reliable one, godaddy or something.
you can register a domain at godaddy with $7.17 use this coupon:goox3004at

we also offer our valued customers free domain name for a year, and it is written in the terms of services that domain names are registered only in the names of the customers, so I would recommend to check the TOS and ask your web hosting provider wether they will register domain that tha+ey give you for free in your name
