hosting advise - please help!
Hi All,
I have been reading a lot about web hosting and i am more confused than before.
these are my requirements:
php and mysql
apache servers
php re-write option and access to the .haccess file
good bandwidth and good space
what would be the best service to use? and why ?
your recommendations are appreciated.
thanks
J

I personally use GoDaddy.com for some of my sites as their 'economy plan' ( https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosti...sp?ci=260#tabs) offers everything you need. Plus, it costs less than $4 a month! I've used it for learning and for actual sites and love it. I can't say for sure if they allow "php re-write option and access to the .haccess file" though, as I've never tried this.
Another great company that I've used with great happiness is Aplus.net. They more than the GoDaddy.com plan, but it costs $119.40 for a year of shared hosting. Once again, I don't know about "php re-write option and access to the .haccess file" as I've never tried it there either.
I hope that helps you out. Maybe someone else here can let you know if either of these companies offer the options you need, which I can't say if they have or not.

Hiya
Many thanks for both comments so far, I am currently looking into both web hosts recommended here and will see.
I also contacted:
This is what they said: Lunarpages.com
"Because we use suPHP to parse php files, you have the option of using a custom
php.ini file. This allows you to be able to use mutliple handlers as well as
mod re-write. In regard to commitment, we do offer a 3 and 6 month billing options for basic and windows plans. However these also include a setup fee unlike the 12 or 24
month options, and do not include the free Coffee cup software."
Its interesting how they say, you pay monthly so and so, but when it comes to the reality they actually do have restrictions before leaving them. ;) something to watch out for i would say.
This is the answers I got from StartLogic:
alan: Welcome to "Startlogic's" live chat service. How may I assist you?
alan: Hello
J: Hiya
J: I wanted to know if I chose the shared hosting plan
J: would I be able to use PHP mod re-write?
J: and have access to the php.ini file and the .haccess file?
alan: Sorry But you will not get access for php.ini file in our shared server plan
j: how about the .haccess file?
alan: Yes you will get access for htacess file
J: and will i be able to run php handlers on the system? like mod rewrites?
alan: Please hold for moment
J: k
alan: I am not sure but you will not get this facility on shared server plan
J: ok many thanks for ur help:)

anyone heard of : IX Web Hosting
i had a quick chat with their support team, apparently i can have access to the .haccess file if i use the linux plan. they support PHP 4 only. <-- would that be a problem in terms of working on my site? are there big differences between 4 and 5?

Do you recommend this company because they really do have amazing customer service or because you're trying to make a quick buck with their affiliate program???
seorocks - Stay away from godaddy and ix web hosting.
Most hosts will allow you to do mod-rewrite via htaccess. A few will allow setting up a custom php.ini file
Because most hosts allow htaccess, it shouldn't be your primary objective. You'll need to look at what else your needs require, your budget, is your site mission critical, what kind of site? (is it database-driven) - number of visitors, pageviews, etc.

thanks for the info. I used to be with names.com and they do not allow mod rewrite. silly really, i had to leave them now bz of that.
yes, my site is database based, will have a lot of products and data about them. not sure yet the amount of visitors i might get, or how much do i need to get. but i am hoping it will be something big, like 1000 visitors a month. any suggestions?

hotstBrain - can you name your top 3 recommendations for hosting. I have an ecommerce site with 1000 visitors a day and IX are starting to get unreliable.
thanks,
Jim.

Re: hosting advise - please help!
I have the same problem, finding good hosts. I wish someone would put up a reliable third party service, like consumer reports for buying goods. A real site, providing third party hosting reviews, that had no advertising and no connections to any of the hosts. Also a good host should provide 60 or 90 days free to start, so you can try them out without having to give them your credit card information.
Just my take, Stuart
