Default Best Screen Resolution?

My site as a screen resolution of 800x 600 with lots of pictures what would be the suggested size to change this to? Below are by stats to ths site.
1024x768 27.36%
1280x800 21.21%
1440x900 9.04%
1280x1024 7.83%
1680x1050 5.17%
800x600 4.76%
240x239 3.28%
1366x768 2.72%
1920x1200 2.59%
320x396 2.11%

Also how much work would this take on per page basis in hours. I assume all photos and graphics will have to be edited to be bigger?

I think it's safe to say that the resolutions of 1280 x and above, are not typically going to be found outside of professional use. 1024 x 768 is the most common, I have found, and I believe I have seen it also recommended by Google.

I shudder to think what that must be like for the kids that are packing IdeaPads!

Huh!??? Recommended by Google for what?

It can't be for viewing their websites because they all work just fine at pretty much any resolution.

I don't recall where I saw it, Dave. Probably in Analytics, though. As I recall, they simply said that 1024 x 768 and up was the most prevalent display size. Which definitely seems like an accurate statement, according to my logs.

I suppose most of the old PC owners stick themselves to 1024x768 screen resolution.

Personally I think 1024 x 768 is the way to go. However, there is no easy answer really, don't forget that netbooks are becoming very popular and have lower resolutions. I guess maybe its best to just go with a resolution that would suit the majority of users to your site.

As of January 2009, according to W3School.com's Browser Display Statistics,

most users have a display with 1024x768 pixels or more ... only 4% had 800X600 ... etc.
