We use Dreamweaver MX 2004 and would like a hidden hit counter on our index page, does anybody know how to add this? Many thanks in advance.

Kind Regards

Default Re: Hit Counter Code Wanted for Dreamweaver

There are two ways to do this.
a) Use a third-party service (many can be found on Google)
b) Host one on your website.

The latter bears a bit of explanation. Your web host will have to support PHP, Perl, or some other server-side scripting language. Provided it does, a hit counter can be written in just 5 or 10 lines of code. I can post code if you want.

Hope it helps.

If you are familiar with ASP, a simple method will be to create an application variable, initially set to 0. Each time the index page is loaded simply increment the application variable.

You should then have a seperate page somewhere that displays the hit counter by simply displaying the application variable.

For more advanced, and far more useful statistics you could use software such as WebTrends or have a look here for something we put together:

This is example data we provide to our SEO clients. Note that all the menus have been deliberately disbaled to prevent any baddies hacking my backend!

Default Doesn't your webhosting come with it

Doesn't your webhosting come with it?
All my hosting packages come standard with webstats in full color.
Having to have to setup your own can be such a pain.

I have a good counter you may have a copy of. You will need php and mySQL on your server and simply add one line of code to include the counter record statistics script. The counter will give you unique, most, currently online, and total page views. Post below if you wish for a copy.

If you are able to you could always use your log files. Running these through programs such as 123LogAnalyzer or WebLogExpert would tell you number of pageviews, unique visitors and loads of other useful information.

Using log files means that there is no code on your homepage at all.

If ASP is available on the host, you can also use ixtreme stats. We use a modified version of this on our current site, and I've used it for several clients as well, and it works quite well.

The example you show is stunning in appearance, but I prefer clean numbers to graphs in most cases.

Cheers
