Default Web page password protection

Can I, without any additional software, password protect a specific web page so that it can be viewed only by someone who has a user/member name and password ? (I use Front Page 2003)

Thank you.

Hi Giftsun,

All you should need to do is set up 'htaccess' resriction for the particular folder you wish to protect. If you are using a repitable hosting company, then this should be possible through your hosting control panel. If not, try emailing them and request this service. It requires no extra software and should come with no extra charge.

You can set-up as many different usernames as you want and if your hosting company is on the ball, you can even set-up groups of users to allow selected access.

Good luck

Herman,

I'm not a Frontpage user so I can't provide you with any insight on this matter, I did find a tutorial on password restriction using Frontpage, hope it helps.

Good luck with your site,

how secure it is is probly up to u... as long as any hackers can get in on your server it should be pretty secure.

And i don't think it's a limit on the usergroupe part either...

I just wanted to mention that the link provided links to a JAVA applet, not a JavaScript, which makes it secure, depending on how carefully it was written. My advice, NEVER use JavaScript for password protection, because even I can crack that, and I'm not anywhere close to a hacker. Java is ok though. However, Java is client-side, and needs to be installed and enabled on the visitor's browser.

I recommend something server-side, like htaccess, which has already been mentioned. If you want to create a complicated usergroup system, with permissions and whatnot, I'm afraid you WILL need additional software such as PHP, which is free btw. If its not your personal server, your host has to have it installed.
