Default Buttons or Text for Higher Click Through Rate

Based on your tests, or tests that you know of, do buttons or plain text links work better in terms of click-through rate?

I searched but only found tests that had been done on email marketing where the email was sent to the same group every few weeks in a newsletter.

I'm wanting to know in terms of websites. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In my experience - text is better.

A button with text on. . works

A button without text seems pointless.

Really? That's not what I expected. I've always used text links.

Thanks.

In part, depends upon "what for".

Buttons can be a good call to action (ie adding an item to a cart) when done properly.

In my personal observations (no hard data that I've recorded), I use buttons for call to action type links and text for informational/navigational links. Much like being consistant with color, using the same colors only for links and not text, I do the same when it comes to buttons and text links. Better usabilty and less confusing to visitors IMO.

Dave has points. Similarly we do the same thing.

Buttons with text really do work. And the logic on the call to action is true as far as our experience says.
