Mike,
The best one I can think of for beginners would be Adobe's Photoshop Classroom in a book. Covers all of the basic with tutorial you do as you go along.

I taught a workshop with Classroom in a book - an excellent choice. Easy to follow examples with step by step instructions. Shows specific applications in simple language.

Default I rec...

I bought several books and the on I like the best and still use is the one published by Peachpit. Their whole series is great. They follow a format that introduces topics in a very logical order and when your're through, it is a VERY easy to use refrence.

I have most of their books.
Freehand and In Design by Sandee Cohen (she's great) and Fireworks are the most well written. Photoshop is very good, but a couple of times they did introduce topics that I had to look up in the index because they had not been covered yet. Just remember that, if you come across something unfamiliar, you'll be jumping to another chapter.

I remember layers had not been talked about, so I read the first of 2 chapters on the subject and went back.

The whole series is logicial, through and makes for great reference when your're done reading.

peace...Paul

Sandee Cohen writes in plain english, very easy to follow. I never read any of her books on Photoshop but the 'Non-Designers' books are super.

Just on more book I'd like to mention is the photoshop book in the "visual" series. I don't have the books handy but I remember it is visual something. They are illustrated by a family of 4, and they chose the authors for each topic.

They also have a great series of books that really lead you by the hand and are very graphic. Great for a first book, but they lack the depth and reference capability that the Peachpit books have.

My recomendation: By the "visual" book to give you a good clear run through, then rip through the Peachpit book to fill in the details. The Peachpit book covers every thing in the photoshop menus one by one. Both books are reasonably priced, by the way. I don't like Sams or Friends of Ed.

Love that Sandee too, eh? The first one I read was the InDesign book. When I heard she had a book on Freehand, I couldn't wait to read it. I had to special order it too. Sandee has no books on photoshop though. I checked her out here:

Default Photoshop Help

Classroom in a Book was a free download the last time I cked the Adobe site.

Another thing that's handy, if you don't own the full version of Photoshop yet, is to play around with the LE version of Photoshop, included with a variety of hardware. I did for quite a while before buying the full version. It's good practice... many features are available in it and they seem to be identical to the full version's.
