I've heard a lot about "converting logos to vector format" . How exactly does one perform verctorization on a logo ? Can it be done using photoshop ?

there's different ways to do that, one is to simply redraw the logo in illustrator or fireworks with the pen tool and cross your fingers that it doesn't take too long. Another option is something like Corel Trace, which will try to convert anything into vectors, but the results can be iffy sometimes. Flash has the same tool built in but it can be even less accurate.

You can also use programs like PSP in order to lay the bitmap as the bottom layer and then lay a Vector layer on top of it, and re-draw the logo yourself.

I had a go with this online tool, and it actually works very well, you just upload a graphic in jpg or whatever and it converts it for you.

chandrika,

That's a great tool but it's too bad that you require an account and that you have to "pay" with "Tokens".

If you have illustrator you can use the "live trace" feature to easily and fairly accurately convert a black and white bitmap image to vector based line art.

Hope this helps...

Kind regards,
Izabella

yep true...you get two free downloads though before you have to pay. I am keeping it in mind for an emergency, as I once tried to vectorise an image doing the tracing and it was too detailed a pic to trace.

I didnt check the prices. I just took my free download which turned out pretty good...and ran.

Thanks a lot everyone...that online tool sounds like a good bet. Once I get enough tokens of course! :P Don't have illustrator..seems like I'll have to get a copy..

There's few programs that will do this 'kinda' for you.
Try these sites for something to play with:
how to convert bitmap to paths
http://www.freefirestudio.com/traceart.h...
Google: "Convert raster vector"

You can also use programs like PSP in order to lay the bitmap as the bottom layer and then lay a Vector layer on top of it, and re-draw the logo yourself.
