I quite like the new Calibri which comes with Windows Vista. Either that or Lucida Sans Unicode on Vista. Verdana is great for reading online and Times New Roman variants are best for reading from books.

For reading on a website I try to always use Verdana.

If a larger, fancy font is wanted, I really like Papyrus. The problem there is if a visitor doesn't have Papyrus, the standard font looks huge (since Papyrus is so small to begin with).

Well, the answers given so far are appropriate for fonts used in code, but for use in graphics I much prefer the fun of different handwritten fonts like BlackJack, BigMisterC and Pepper. If I need a good solid display font for graphics I like Garamond for serif and Futura for sans serif.

Nobody mentioned Georgia for a code font. It seems to offer easy legibility onscreen while still offering the more classic serif presentation. I don't use it all the time, but for certain sites it's great, especially if the site audience is used to reading stuff in print. I use it a lot for author sites and law/legal/attorney sites.

No it's good that myriad isn't a default font because then everyone would use it. I like Zurich and Headline right now, my favorites change all the time.

And I HATE HATE HATE Papyrus, the most inflexible, difficult to read from any distance font that everyone insists on using in their logos.

I concur, Georgia rocks! What a striking profile in an ad. IMHO, used sparingly, there's simply none better for a headline.

For web pages, I mostly use Verdana (using a CSS with Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans-serif substitute). Verdana really seems easier to read, and even the Mac can use it !

As you may know, the fonts one can read are only the one which are installed on his computer, and not the one which are installed on your own, designer, workstation. By the way, for titles, headlines and anything else that are a strong part of the website design, I mostly use "eroded" fonts.

I like them ! They are cute, and easily add that touch to the design, which will make it so diferent. But they require more than 15px sizes to be at their best !

verdana is the easiest to read online, in my opinion. Serif fonts give me a headache after a while and just look I don't know...girly? Just not professional, IMO.

In graphics, I tend to like flowy fonts - brushstroke, scriptina, but only in moderation.

Verdana is my choice for online reading. Georgia is a great serif font. I especially like it italicized.

Offline, I prefer Arial for basic communication. My preference for other fonts depends on what I'm doing with it.

And I'm with Dr. Tandem. I HATE Comic Sans.

Yes! I forgot about Georgia. A superb font that looks fantastic across a range of uses and applications. Dubbya - Kudos for the comment on using Georgia in an ad or headline. It looks very professional; almost regal.

comic sans is a funny font, don't ask me why. it makes me smile but I never use it anywhere...too recognizable.

dubbya - have you ever watched TV and shouted "that font is DOLPHIN...(or insert other font name)"?
I've done that a lot ... I'm way more geeky than you

Yo, my english is not that good !
Eroded, I mean, is when the borders are not too clean - like painted letters, or old and rusted letters, so on...
These for example are eroded fonts, and I really like to use them (sparingly) for main titles...

Lucida Sans Unicode has always been a very easy to read font. Given a standard 100% font size, 0.7em is very readable, and allows a large amount of text in a small area.

Georgia is an intriguing textface worth finding ways to incorporate in place of the standard Times and its variants.

Another font that is probably not on a lot of home computers is Berling Antiqua. This is a very readable font that comes bundled with Microsoft Reader. Very scalable, very smart. A well chosen font for book reading. It really is a pity that Microsoft decided not to bundle this font with Windows. It would have gained wide usage immediately.

See for yourself.
