Default CSS menu problems.

We are currently using a css driven menu for the main navigation on our site and we seem to have a small issue. Now I am not sure if the issue is with our menu or with our customer on the other end but here is what happens. And by the way this is very rare but it does come up once in a while. A visitor will come to the site attempt to navigate to another page and the menu at the top of the page will not work. As I said this is a css menu and it is placed in an include file that displays on most of our pages. Could this be a browser issue? We have tried to duplicate this on several different computers using several different browsers in our office and it always works for use. I just want to make sure that we are not overlooking something simple. A certainly don't want to lose a visitor because of the navigation menu. Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

I have had problems with portions of web pages that are part of an include file not displaying. Statements like this:

The problems just comes up from time to time and no good way to fix other than making the portion part of the page. I have not played with PHP (or other methods) includes, they make work better.

But why not make the CSS external and link to it like this?

<LINK href="style2a.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen">

Thanks for the response. We do have the css file linked externally so I am pretty sure that is not the issue.

It is just the css drop down menu that doesn't occasionally work. Includes show up, thankfully, and we have never had a problem with that.

Hi. I've seen this a few times. It even affected Google AdWords. There was a case of some web browsers being unable to click on adverts - so the impression was shown, and the advert was unclickable. Google fixed it, but didn't report back what the problem was, IIRC.

The cases that I've investigated, and indeed, triggered when learning CSS some years ago, involved navigation lists, positioned at the top of the document and then adjusted by right alignment of centering. The problem was, IIRC, one of layers. You can end up with the text visible, but the active part of the link is not accessible through the layer in front. I think I understood the problems better after reading "PositionIsEverything.net". It had a lot of examples of CSS that would and wouldn't work in various situations.

You might also want to look at the practical stuff on A List Apart - they often give reasons and explanations for why vcarious CSS techniques won't work. And I think that Eric Meyer's book on CSS has something about this problem - but I've loaned my copy to someone else and can't verify that.

Cheers, JeremyC.

We use CSS for our main menu as well. We had the same problem at launch due to Internet Destroyer 6 and 7 responding differently to CSS. There is a work around using conditional statements. Checkout http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/index.html for help on it.
