Default ALT tags not working in Firefox

Before you go to this site that I am working on, I warn you that it has offensive content...

http://su-fination.com/Photos/PhotoCategories.cfm

If you mouseover the images in IE7, I was able to include the variables and they appear fine (although I'd like to make the caption bold - html doesn't seem to get rendered in the alt tag)

In firefox, they do not show. Is there a different way (that is cross browser friendly) that I can have a box appear over my images when I mouseover instead of using an ALT tag?

The alt tag is for displaying a text description of the content of the picture for users who have pictures turned off or for users with disabilities. It is not for supplying supplementary information. The fact that IE displays the contents of the alt tag even though the picture is there is a quirk of IE, not a feature of HTML.

You can do pop up windows with information in using JavaScript. There's an example on my genealogy web site at for example: http://www.sawers.ca/lines/sawers/SawersTree.htm Mouse over any of the green highlighted text to see the pop up. Save that page as HTML and you will see how I did it. Feel free to steal the code.

Firstly 'alt' is an attribute and not a tag. You could try the 'title' attribute instead of alt.

I suggest using both: Alt and Title attributes.
