XSLT is a subset of XSL. Links:
  1. Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) Version 1.1
  2. XSL Transformations (XSLT)
  3. Related information at DigitalStart.net

XSLT (Exstensible Stylesheet Language Transformation) and XPath (XML Path language), a query language on XML nodes, are part of XSL (the Exstensible Stylesheet Language).

XML is very general, and in a way, HTML can be thought of as a XML dialect.

Since XML is and important element in the AJAX (Asynchronous JAvascript + Xml) family of technologies, so is XSL(T). Since, AJAX via its heart, the XMLHttpRequest Object, lets your application communicate with the webserver asynchronously (in the background) AJAX is in a nutshell a family of technologies that lets you get rid of page reloads, and as such takes your web applications closer to the way desktop applications function.

AJAX is in my personal view the first step in this sort of web functionality and the sooner you learn it, the better.
