Default Which WYSIWYG HTML editor do you use?

Well it has to be Dreamweaver... it has the competition beaten hands down... however I'm still a bit of a purist at heart.. and I do still do plenty of sites in my TextPad editor! :c)
(from Helios Software)

Default Dreamweaver

I have to agree with Paul, dreamweaver has everyone beat. The only thing I use it for though is as a text editor and ftp client. Sad I know... I just don't like that drag and drop stuff. Maybe I'm just too much of a control freak over my code, but that comes from me being a programmer and not a designer.

DreamWeaver is GREAT! I'm not a programmer by any means and I love using DreamWeaver. It's nice when an illustrator can create web pages:)

I use more than one editor. (Too bad the poll won't allow for multiple selections and grade from that!) Depending on the design needs I use the tool that does the job quickest, whether one of the wysiwyg tools or one that is text-based.

Default DW

I'm with paulhiles & mysticlighthouse.
I'm a designer & a programmer, but I appreciate DreamWeaver for the coding features. I don't have a great txt editor (M$ notepad) apart from DW. I like how the window splits into code on top (with line numbers!), wysiwyg on the bottom. I mostly write the code and watch it change in the bottom. I can't stand the default JavaScripts that DW applies - the only "drag-&-drop" feature I use is the CSS window, and that's because it uses my own hand-written style sheet.

For the design side, I stick with Photoshop/Image Ready.

*I'm on DW 4. Can someone tell me if a more recent version has the ability to chmod a file on the remote site WITHOUT using a 3rd party extension?

I too use multiple editors and agree that could have been allowed in the pole. I am a big fan of Dreamweaver MX - but not the earlier Dreamweavers accept maybe the UltraDev version.

I always prefered Allaire's Homesite backed up by Chami.com's HTML-Kit. But Dreamweaver MX and the MX series have my vote now. Will be interesting to see the changes in FrontPage 2003.........

I do my programming on other editors.

Having started this thread I should state what I use really. I code by hand and use Top Style Pro 3 for my initial layouts and page coding then use Ultraedit for any changes I have to do to my site once it's live.

TopStyle Pro 3 has some nice features like auto tag suggestion/dropdrown list for both HTML and CSS, HTML/XHTML tidy, CSS tidy (both External style and internal block), As you type preview in seperate pane, list of tags in side pane (both HTML and CSS), the option to set which HTML /CSS type tags you wish to have in the list (ie HTML4, 4.01, XHTML, and CSS level1, level2, webTV, browsersafe and so on).

Ultraedit has to be the premier plain text editor with it's syntax hilighting, HTML tidy, FTP download/upload, and auto backup of old copies of files when you save a new version.

I tried so hard to like dreamweaver and I just can't. I find it makes the code way too lenghty but I respect why some people like it, but hands down Homesite is the best one for me.

I like Namo WebEditor better than Dreamweaver. It's easier to use, much cheaper and writes clean code.

Notepad!...Wordpad for bigger documents...I just can't seem to get out of these old habits of hand-coding....

I agree with you eXaion, that's basically all I'm using Dreamweaver for. The only difference is the color coding of the tags :-) and the ftp.

If, like me, you prefer coding by hand have a look at http://tswebeditor.net.tc/ . It's free, has syntax hilighting and a W3C compliant HTML tidy.

I always code by hand and I use my PHP-oriented text editor for that (PHPCoder, I'm not sure it's the best, I just got used to it). I remember using Dreamweaver when I started learning HTML, but I think wysiwyg editors are for learning (I found them far less productive than hand-coding). I simply hate that ms attitude: "We know better than you what you want to do"! But hey, that's just my opinion.

Default WYSIWYG

Still happily using AOLPRESS (no longer supported) although I tend to write using Wordpad most of the time.

Hmm,
I have tried all kinds of wysiwyg(s) over the years, and currently using FP(client preferred) to layout ideas, but I learned to code by hand so I usually end up in the HTML(in any program) modifying/tweaking/coding as I need
Wordpad is great too!

I only cold code, and for that I use Ultra edit. I am trying to use Dreamweaver for for the experience, but always end up going back to UE.

I didnt realize this had become a poll as I had gotten involved in other threads. hehehe

I use dreamweaver to get my template down. Once that is set I usually split into two to three include files that I wrap around my individual pages. Works well for me.

From that point I hand code.

Default wysiwyg

FrontPage is my one and only. That, plus a big fat book on HTML from Que. Ain't no way FP answers all the necessary questions.

My league is in the "I just want to get the page up" sector. Afterwards, at hand-wringing time, I visit this forum (thanks everyone!).

Smiles,
