XHTML is a stricter, cleaner and more advanced version of HTML. From a practical point of view for most coders, there isn't really all that much difference between them -- mainly just adding a slash to the end of self-closing tags like br, img and input.

I would say the biggest benefit of XHTML is that it "future-proofs" a website. Sites written in valid XHTML are unlikely to break in new versions of web browsers, whereas I've seen people get away with some horribly sloppy code in HTML 4. Who knows if those sites will keep working as browsers evolve.

XHTML was actually introduced to make HTML more of a structural language so as to leave the presentational aspects of design to other technologies. It aims to bring about a certain control and strictness of syntax to make HTML better able to handle future technological changes. In other words it is about preparing for the future.

Not for XHTML.

In a nutshell. This answers your question about explaining the merits of XHTML.

Also, all tags absolutely must be lowercase.
