Default CSS and browser problem

I am having a heck of a time getting my web page to view correctly in the different browsers. I know this is a common problem. I messed with the CSS for several days now, but nothing I have come up with has helped.

If anyone is willing to take the time to look at a temporary html page along with the css and let me know what I need to do to fix the browser problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

In particular, is the problem of the left and right columns displaying correctly.

I'm Using IE, it looks alright... I just don't know exactly how it is supposed to look so I can't say how wrong it looks.
one note about your menus... you shouldn't make it so a user has to click on the option for the submenu to stay active. it should just be that when you rollover the option, the submenu stays active and you can click on it.
if you could give a description of how your site SHOULD look, we could help to better explain why it looks the way it does.

Default CSS and browser problem - what it should look like

When I view it in IE 6, the left navigation menu is cut in half. The right column content is not in the right column but way below the left navigation menu. And the items that are supposed to be in the right column are overlaid on the rest of the left navigation menu.

Since I did not create the navigation (although using it with permission), I really do not know how to make the adjustments that you are suggesting.

I appoligize for being so ignorant.

IE 6.0.2900.2180: Doesn't work (8 menu items, submenu is about 50 pixels to the right)

FireFox 1.5.0.2: Works (17 menu items, submenu abuts main menu)

Opera 7.51: Works

NN 7.1: Works

Looks like something's wrong with either your config, or the menu you're using. I would think a good menu will determine which browser is being used, and use an appropriate set of css/config files... a bit of work, but why most menus cost at least something...

I took a second look at the one I use on my site in FireFox, and lo and behold, time for me to get a new menu too :o

Mine didn't work in either FireFox or NN 7.1. So at least yours works in NN. :/

Guess I'll be busy tonight. :|

Default get one that works

Why don't you go to CodeSpy.com or dynamicdrive.com and get a menu script that works cross browser? If you insist on using a java menu you should be able to find a free one on one of those sites that will work for you....realizing that a lot of people have java script turned off which will make your menu not usable for those folks.

I've gone back to plain old text links on my site with much better results.

Good luck

These are most likely inaccessible. Better get a CSS based solution which IS accessible even when javascript is turned off.

Check out alistapart, and bonrouge...both are great CSS resources.

Should find what you need there.

Hope that helps.

With IE6, I'm seeing your links to SafeSurf, W3C, etc on the lower left and partially off the screen to the left. With FF, I see them at the top right and on the screen/page.

Since everything validates, I think the problem is that you are mixing CSS and tables for layout. It just depends on which configuration is given priority by the specific browser. Pick one or the other method for layout and I think it will solve the issue.

dynamicdrive.com ... very nice place. I found my new CSS-based menu there, and just installed it last night on my main GiftsForYou.Biz page (and learned a bit more about CSS in the process).

Now my site appears to be working well in all the browsers I run (IE6, FF, NS, NN, and Opera; all on W2K and WinXP).

I used the "AnyLink CSS Menu" menu at:
http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/indexb.html

The only thing I really had to do was to change the positioning to better suit my vertical menu structure. Works great!

Thanks Weedy Lady!
