Default Image Sizes that look right in 800x600 up to much higher

Hi guys. I am designing a new page for my site, but I am getting a little confused with image sizes.
pc.ign.com
I want to make curved images for my tables like the above site.
If someboody could explain to me what sizes to make the images so they fit within an 800x600 monitor yet also in a resolution like 1600 x 1200.
The page is split into three columns similar to this:
www.technicalgeek.com
The table images will mostly be in the main column.
I am really just confused, so maybe if somebody could just explain everything, I would start to understand.
Thanks a lot & great site!

Hi again Becky,

On the site that you refer to... http://pc.ign.com/?fromint=1 they have used background images to give the illusion of stretching across the middle section of the table. The table uses 100% width and the background image is held in the first <td> cell. (see below)

<table cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 border=0 width=100%>
<tr>
<td width=100% colspan=4 background="http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/header_bg.gif">

Two of the images used are below:

With the images used as backgrounds they just repeat and fill the entire width of the table. This 'stretchy' section in the middle is combined with fixed elements in other table cells at either end of the banner area.

If you notice the image 'headers' on the smaller tables are a fixed size, and include imagemaps to make them clickable!

Hope that helps,

Paul
