Default Firefox Extension Icon Design Contest

Some of you may know, I created the SEOpen Firefox Extension. The icon used in the extension is awful and I'd like a new one. I pretty much suck at graphic design, so I'm appealing to the Firefox and WebProWorld communities to help me out.

Old and busted:

I just released a new version of the extension, and I'm holding a contest to design a new icon for the next version. Here's the details:
  • I need the same icon in two sizes: 100 x 100 and 32 x 32
  • In .png format
  • I'll put the file size limit at "reasonable", because these can be compressed, this isn't a major concern
  • The winning design will need to be released under one of these two Creative Commons licenses or to the public domain so it can be used in this extension (and other works) in the spirit in which it was intended
  • I will be the sole judge, asking input from a few people who have kept me out of trouble in the past
  • You can use whatever software you want as long as the product meets the other rules (I'll guarantee cool points to anything made using Krita on openSUSE 10.1 Beta 3)
  • The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 24th, 2006.
  • The winner will be announced within a few days of the deadline.
  • To enter, post the 100 x 100 version to this thread. If for some reason you refuse to join WebProWorld to post your submission here, email it to me and I'll post it for you.
  • The winner will get a text link to a site of their choice on the SEOpen Extension page, attribution on the same page, and attribution in the extension's code. That page gets a few dozen unique visitors a day and is currently a PR 6. The URL and anchor text requested will have to be reasonable (most adult sites are OK, but "hate" sites or anything that will get me GoogleSlapped won't work).
  • I don't plan on it, but I reserve the right to change the rules prior to the deadline if something unexpected happens.
This contest is not sponsored or endorsed by WebProWorld, but big thanks to them for letting me host it here.

Unless stated otherwise, the images posted below are the sole property of the posters, only the winner will be required to "open source" their design.

Feel free to comment on the designs, but please keep them friendly, or at least constructive. Also feel free to post comments or questions about this contest in this thread. Comments or questions about the extension itself should be posted over here. Welcome to anyone new to WebProWorld, we hope you stick around!

Hi,

Hope you like them... Of course if you like the style of one, but the font or color of another, they can easily be swapped...

Regards,
Leo

Here's mine:

(Looks like MTO had a similar idea as myself with the magnifying glass. I promise I thought of it and designed mine before ever visiting this forum.)

Thanks Pete!

The following were emailed to me by a user:

The email inspired my wife to create a submission using my PlanetSuSE hackergotchi, she thinks she's funny. To be clear, my wife's entry will not be considered unless there is a huge public outcry for it to be chosen, in which case the non-related runner up will get the link.

Lol, dont worry Pete, no problem on my side... :) A magnifying glass is a normal symbol for searches.

Good Flood6 is getting more options... :D

Default The "open-world/open-door" concept

I thought this looked fun, and I may have gone a bit overboard.

The initial idea behind my design was to visually integrate two concepts: (1) this is definitely a Firefox extension, and (2) SEOpen's essential function is to open a variety of (literal and metaphorical) doors for the SEO-minded:

Of course the problems came when I shrank this down to 100x100 and 32x32:

While not all that bad (look at the actual Firefox logo at 32x32), it's still not immediately clear what these things are when they get reduced that small.

After pulling my hair out, I figured the "open-world" concept maybe could be used on the SEOpen site as a logo, and the icons could just focus on SEOpen's core functionality:

And with text...

Of course, font and font color is easily changable if necessary.

I'm pretty happy with this. Hope you like it.

B

Default Winner

Sorry for taking so long to wrap this up.

I've talked to a few different people about it and we've decided that MTO's entry should be the next icon.

I like the one on the right without the drop shadow.

Honestly, thanks to everyone for their submissions. They were all at least 10 times better than what I had been using. Big thanks!

Oh, wow!!!
I hadn't noticed... lol
Checked many times , I cant believe I didn't check past March 9, it seemed to me I even checked last week (bad memory I guess).

Anyway, happy and honored you liked my entry. :-)
If you need any change just tell me.

Truth is there were some really good other options that I also liked very much. I'm sure it was a hard decision. Congratulations to all.

And once more, thanks for the extension, it's one of my favorites. :-)
