On/Off - it really doesn't matter, it's a mood thing for me. Some days it inspires, some days it intrudes, but I never get mad at it - that's what politicians are for, but you can't unplug them. LOL

Default Unplugged!

I have to say I have the simplest method of avoiding music on websites... I unplugged my speakers from my web computer altogether! But hey, I have a serious problem with working with noise, my brain just doesn't function propery with unexpected sounds etc. I think I would work best in a sound proof room (with nice soft padded walls...)

That reminds me of a quote by Erma Bombeck (I think it was her anyway)

"When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen. When they're finished, I climb out."

Maybe that's why they are making cubicle walls softer? hmmmm

you got that right, wenwilder and masterpeace..I don't function well at all with any kind of noise or interuptions.... my 15 month old grandson lives here... there's a lot of door closing at times when he and his mom have an argument.. I know who's gonna win before it starts.. don't know why she argues with him so hard.

I usually keep mine on playing my own music. But I do get a little annoyed by sites that dont let you turn the music off or they just erupt into sound. If I get to a site that I dislike the music or sounds I just hit the mute button or go somewhere else.

I do my most productive work after the family goes to bed, so when I'm visiting sites at night, if I run across a site blaring noise of any kind at me, it generates a mad scramble to find the web control (or the speaker jack behind the full tower under the desk!) to turn the blankety-blank stuff off before I get an earful from spouse or children. (And as for sites without visitor controls, I research the site IP address and add it to a "banned sites" registry I keep for such thoughtless offenders...then think about sending them a complaint email using 18 point bright green text on an orange background, and code in a loop of color-reversals in fractional-second increments!)

I keep mine off, not only to avoid the unexpected website that blares, but mainly to avoid hearing my stupid Lexmark printer say "Printing has started" and "Printing has finished" - and if there's an 'off switch' for it, *I* can't find it!

hehehe... as a psychologist, one of the things I often tell parents of older children and teens is that parents are never going to win a battle of wills... it's hopeless... they have way more energy than us, they can stay awake longer, they aren't limited by logic or reason, and we will never out-do them for stubbornness... :-)

I solved this by using headphones. They sit on the shelf next to me,so if one repetitive sound annoys me I can shove them to the back of shelf, and if I want to actually listen to something I can put them on. But for the most part, if I come across a site with 'noise' I close it as fast as I can. I have download limits as many do, I think its inconsiderate for a homepage to have auto play music. It should be my option if I want to listen to it.

I get round the problem of annoying website music and sounds by keeping the Wave balance volume low and listening to my own music on cd...
