Default Changes with Frontpage?

I am trying to help a friend make some changes to a website she had built for her. I am using Frontpage. How can I do this correctly? I am use to simply accessing the website and then clicking on "Edit" on my toolbar in which brings Frontpage up with the website page in it. But when I make a change and save it, it is not showing up on the website. I even click on "Publish" and things don't look right. What should I be doing? Thanks for all the help - we need to make changes to www.millanisantiquecottage.com. The site was built by www.cottagecollections.com and they don't really offer any help. Thanks again in advance for any help you can offer. Detail info that is! I like details. Thanks!

Well, first of all, I'd ditch Frontpage.

Secondly, I take it you're not a web designer? I would do some research first, learn some basic html hand-coding...this makes the existing code you're looking at make a lot more sense, and the changes a lot easier.

Find yourself an FTP client...the one i use is 'FTP Commander', and is free (last i checked). With this, you download your pages to your computer, make your changes, and then upload them back onto the server.

Just make sure you have back-ups of back-ups of the original site files, to revert back to should the need arise.

Best of luck.

Default thank you

Thank you so much for your input but I love my Frontpage and I can use it easily. I am looking for someone that can help with the question I asked. Thanks again.

FrontPage 2003 ??

I can help you with that version but it is quite different than previous versions so I figure I'd ask first.

William.

Publish won't help - that will just upload your page to your web server (assuming you have space on a web server?).

Have you tried clicking the 'Preview' tab down the bottom? Alternatively select the 'Preview web page in separate browser' and click 'F5' to refresh the page after each change.

I started out with FrontPage, realised its limitations and ditched it when I mastered hand-coding.

If you are getting the original site by opening the
site and clicking "edit" - which brings it to FP, you may NOT get all the files (graphics, CSS) you need.

It would be best to get the files via FTP by loging in to the
existing webhost account. Download those files (html, graphics
and CSS) to you computer and then open them with FP.

A process:
  • Create a NEW website in FP... a one page site is fine,
naming it something appropriate so you'll know its
    for the redesigned site.
  • Download the files into that FP folder. OR if you
use the "edit" SAVE the file to that new web folder.
  • Make your changes with FP
  • Save your changes TO YOUR COMPUTER.
  • Upload the changed files via FTP to the web host.

"Publishing" works IF you have permission (login info) for the existing site. But if you have that
using FTP is better.

Default Editing FrontPage

Hello abitofparis,

I use FrontPage 2003 and I really like it for it's simplicity. I have had the same recommendations that you have received "get rid of it", but I am very new to webdesign so it is what I am using. I think I will eventually get rid of it as I learn more about coding.

Do you understand the file transferring (FTP)that Roland is talking about? Do you have a download that will transfer the files to the server once you have made the edits?

Quick word of advice:
Avoid Frontpage as if it was the bubonic plague.
No. Joke.

Default Re: Changes with Frontpage?

While searching Google for unrealted matters I ran across this post. I am the owner of Cottage Collections.com. The site in question was programmed in ASP.net and while we do offer support to all of our clients and have offered support to this particular client many times, we can not offer free support to anyone that ineterferes with the site code. Our sites are not meant to be edited with front page. They're designed to be intuitive and require no software at all for udpates.

Thanks for the opportunity to respond to this original post.

Red face Re: Changes with Frontpage?

I have to say that I never intended a post that I made as follows:

To make anyone think badly of Joyce at Cottage Collection. I was only trying to help a friend with her website with my software (FrontPage) and asked for help with it. The comment above regarding cottage collection not "really offer any help" meant that they couldn't help me with FrontPage becuase they did not use FrontPage. My website Shabby Chic & Cottage Style Furniture, Bedding, Lighting and Fabric was built with Frontpage, I built others using this and asked Cottage Collection how to edit the site with FrontPage, and they could not help me because they did not use it. Therefore I came here to this site and asked for help.
Sorry about the wording looking as if I was implying that they weren't helping with the website. I am sorry for the mis-wording. I hope this helps. I have no way intended anyone to think I was bad mouthing anyone. It was my need to know about Frontpage only.
Thanks so much.
I can't believe I remembered my password after all this time - almost 2 years now since I have accessed this site. And what a wonderful place it is to go for help with website needs and various other information that you need help with on the web and at home on your computer.
I must get back on here again and start to research some other questions I have. And by the way, I still use FrontPage, I have about mastered it by now. Though there are new questions regarding some kind of new link exchange and SEO stuff.
So, until I can get my questions online, that is all for now. Thanks again! Jen
