You really ought to have an option for both.

For example I use both. the 1st and 2nd books I can definitely vouch for. Elizabeth Castro was my "bible" when I was taking my C & G Level 3 at college and the 1st DHTML CSS book I have sworn by for years.

Other publications I would recommend: Learn HTML in 21 days by Laura Lemay (Quite a modest statement from a book thats bigger than the phone directory)

And Web Designer and .Net Magazine (UK) have some pretty cool tutorials each month for everything from web design to Flash and PHP.

Having said that my Web CEO university course is online. So IMHO it really is a merry mix between the two.

Since books have a lead time of up to 12 months and they take awhile to write, by the time they hit the bookshelves xhtml/css and other coding books are out of date. The web is the preferred means of getting up to date information, especially on the newest and coolest bug busting css tricks.

Good sources of information- Just google 'em:

Eric Meyer
Molly Holschweig
Dan Cedarholm
CSS-Discuss and its hardcore members (I love ya all!!!)
w3.org
Stu Nicholls
Jeffrey Zeldman

Now, oddly enough, Eric, Molly, and Dan have all written books, so if you just have to have something in hardcopy, I'd start there.
