problems setting new home page.
Hi,
I'm following some good advice from this site, and am removing the splash page from my site.
I've set the main page as the new home page, and deleted the original splash page from my remote site, but when i go to my site online the splash page is still there.
I'm using Dreamweaver MX and reasonably new to web design.. any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?
Thanx!

Chances are it is cached on your computer.
Go to Tools >> Internet Options and on the General tab click 'Delete Files'.
Now try it.
If that doesn't work - and if you are CERTAIN it isn't on the server - it could be an issue with your proxy server. Try that one above, first.
I can still see the cached page too, but I KNOW I have a proxy problem. This time tomorrow it'll probably be gone, though.
Having said all that, it looks to me like you still have a file called index.html on your server. Are you REALLY sure you don't?

Hi Sualdam,
Thanks for getting onto that so quickly.
The problem could be that both the splash page and the main page i'm trying to set as homepage are both called index.html (the site was originally put together by a designer for me) What if i were to rename the main page?
I followed your suggestion and deleted the temp internet files, but it's still coming up the same.

That's what you have to do - and what I thought you had done! That is, renamed the files and deleted the one you didn't need.
When you have a cloaked domain (or in fact, if you simply type a url in which isn't a specific file, just a valid directory path) the page called index.htm, index.html, default.htm, or default.html usually loads automatically (whether or not the default ones are valid depends on your host).
In this case, you need to either rename or delete the file currently called index.html, and then rename main.htm(l) to index.html.
As long as the only file that can be loaded is called index.html, and assuming you renamed the right one, then the page you want should be displayed.
But remember that cache thing just in case.

It is now the only file named index.html
I guess the problem is the cache...
I'll check it again tomorrow.
Thanks for your help!

Are you sure?
Earlier I typed your url and added index.html to the end. I saw the splash page.
Now when I type the same I get a page not found.
Are you sure you renamed it properly? You didn't end up calling/trying to call it index.html.html or something like that, did you?

Well, i just succeeded in losing web access to my entire site!
I have returned everything to it's original state, with the splash page as the home page etc until i can figure out exactly what i'm doing.
I'm pretty new to this, and have been updating my site so far without any problems, till now... heh heh heh
As far as i could see, everything was named correctly, and according to the book i'm looking at it should have worked. I'm gonna start again from the beginning.

Personally, I didn't find the splash page that much of a problem.
I know when I started, having an index page like that that provided a gateway was standared practice.
I still do it now when the content requires a certain browser version or the Flash plug-in. I'm not convinced it is wrong, and it certainly won't harm your site - the only issue was the graphic filesize in my opinion.
There are no absolutes on this. A matter of choice, I guess.

problems setting new home page
Well lucky you, Dreamweaver MX? I'm still stuck on Ultradev(DW4)
If you have all your settings right index.htm should automatically overight index.htm and replace it with you new version.
if this is not happening check with your ISP that they have not set up a HTDOCS folder where your site is. Otherwise you are uploading to a directory that is not visible.
Other solutions as mentioned before is to delete all old stuff on your host site and upload your new site.
Going back to dreamweaver - check your cache and then do a "Check links sitewise", get rid of all Orphan files and check broken links and external links.
just a few ideas, I update my site every month and any changed files are automatically updated. Somewher, sometime you have changed something that is screwing you up. Think back to the changes and you will probably find the answer.
Hope the above helps.

Probably the easiest way to replace your splash screen is to make a copy of your main page, transfer it to the base directory and out of /Digicart/, rename it something like index-dev.html and check it first before renaming the splash page to something like index-old.html
Thats the way I do it when I want to make changes to the index.html on any site I design.
