Javascript randomly working! :-\

I have some Javascript on my page, that never works when I first visit the page, but if I reload, or go back to it, it works. For the life of me I cannot figure this out.

The page is www.planetkarl.com

The code uses the mathematical rules of the game "life". See "rules of life" link on my page for the details.
The file is "life.js"

What would cause this? Its really frustrating...

Also, any comments on my page would pe appreciated as well. :-)

Those are not defined at start so it is having problems
