Default Uploading a site with Dreamweaver

I am not so sure that it's a wise move to trust uploading your site pages with your design tool.

I wouldn't trust it to anything less that WSFTP.

My 2 cents

Default DW file upload options

When defining a site in Dreamweaver, there is a Remote Info option where you can specify the type of access you would prefer. Here you could enter FTP (if that is your preference), then you enter the website address, the target folder and finally your username and password details.

The facility is there for convenience as much as anything, and should be just as secure as opening up the FTP client separately.

A lot of people use DW as their only FTP client.

I wouldn't because it isn't particularly feature rich, but there's nothing at all wrong with it. And it isn't automatic (unless you force it to be).

The built in ftp is handy if you're just updating a couple pages, but for more than that, it probably would be better to use an ftp client

I agree that using DW as an FTP client is not the best way, if you are not careful, it keeps uploading all the page assest (images etc) everytime you click on the send arrow.

I personnally use FTPVoyager - an award winning client that is so easy, evan a monkey could do it. Get a free trail version here:

www.ftpvoyager.com/dn.asp

PS - I can provide a license for this at discounted prices..

Everyone has their favourites, I guess, and there's no perfect FTP client. I use CuteFTP and have done for must be getting on for 10 years.

But people who are new often want the easiest way. And for them DW is definitely that. One program to use and all.

I have clients who maintain the content on their sites and they happily manage with DW and upload only the pages they want to. So it can't be all bad.

Remember that all the original poster wanted to know was 'how to' with DW :)

First you have to define the remote information in the site manager.

When you've done that you can expand the site manager to show remote/local panes.

All you have to do then is right click the file you want to upload and select "synchronise" then select "Put newer files to remote" then preview it, click ok and away it goes.
