Is there a best program for custom text?

Is photoshop good enough on it's own or should I also look into getting something like Xara 3D.

All suggestions are appreciated. If you know of any other programs for creating dynamic text let me know.

It would depend on the type of text you wish to create. I do most of my work in either Photoshop or Fireworks, and can simulate 3D text surprisingly well. If you're looking for actual 3D, however, you'll need to look into real 3D modelling software. A good freeware 3D program can be found at www.blender3d.org, where you'll also find a ton of tutorials and links to reference sites.

If you can provide more information on the effects you need to acheive, I can probably be more specific.
