Default How much does cache cost me?

Ok, ok...so I was fishing for a bad pun...

Anyway, I am curious if there is a way to cache images while forcing the page HTML to reload.

I would like to do something like Amazon where you go to the home page and it not user specific. You log in and then it takes you to another page. But when you go back to the home page it is completely changed and addresses you by name.

As far as I can tell, every page does not cache on their site. Is this the case, or do they use another method?

If I decide to do a no-cache on every page is the load time going to kill me (my average page size is smaller than Amazon's)?

Ultimately I am looking to change the appearance of any page, even if the customer has a cached copy.

Your ideas and input are greatly appreciated!
