Default Digital Camera purchase

Went to CNET for this one. Now I'm here, and in need of help.
We are looking for a camera that is 8 mega pixels or greater. Price =< $1000.00
Stills of buildings and people (action shots not anticipated)
User is a film camera expert, but we would like to move to a format that is quicker than film and scanner, with at least the same quality.
Use a 4x4 format for film, would like the same size digital; or its equivalent. And what is the equivalent?
If you have one that you love, hate or something else please advise.
Primary use will be print, but would like the ability to use for web also, if that is a real issue.

Hi,

Go to my site at http://www.creativecauldron.com/articles.shtml and read my article "Digital Photography, Is It Right For You?" This should answer some of your questions.

Have Fun,
Jeff

The different models of Canon digital EOS are good. They have interchangeable lenses that can be used by a 35 mm Cannon film camera too. If you upgrade to a newer Cannon digital down the road the lenses can be used also.

Hi,

This should give you a rough idea to get some decent images.

Image Resolution Photographic Print Size
640 x 480 4 x 6"
1024 x 768 5 x 7"
1600 x 1200 8 x 10"

For anything other than use on web pages get at least 3 megapixels, and preferably 6.

Have Fun,
Jeff

The number of pixels does not count. There are a lot of other important factors - lense quality, sensor quality, image processing etc.
Example: the 6MP $800 Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) is BETTER, BETTER, BETTER than the 8MP $1200 SONY 828. There are a lot of other examples (can be seen at www.dpreview.com
Consider to buy a camera with a CMOS sensor. This type of sensor delivers silky-smooth images without any sign of noise even at ISO-400.
My advice: Canon 300D. I use one - it's a great camera, even with the dirty cheap EF-S 18-55 lens.
