Default Slideshow - HTML, CSS, Javascript

-------
Jun 18, 2004

A "slideshow-like" effect needs the following features:

(1) A single boxed area where each full size picture will be displayed

(2) A single "text" area displaying different text for each picture

(3) A "Previous" button and "Next" button for navigation

(4) The pictures should not all be preloaded - there are many pictures and it would take a very long time!

(5) Several additional navigation buttons to "jump to" specific picture categories

Due to the large number of pictures, it is desired that each picture be loaded ONLY when requested via the aforementioned navigation. Can the combination of just HTML and CSS do this (particularly the externally held pictures)? Or, is a Javascript solution needed (or perhaps just used a tiny bit to assist the HTML and CSS solution)? A pure HTML and CSS solution would be preferred if it is possible.

An example illustration of the desired layout - drawn with just text - is shown below. Your suggestions and/or code snippets would be greatly appreciated.
