Default making a password protected site

hello all, i had a quick question.
i would like to make a small site just for me and a selected few. i would like to make the entire site password protected, as when you type in the URL, a prompt comes up for a username and a password. i would prefer that you could create multiple usernames with multiple passwords, but just having one user and one pass would be fine as well.
once the information is entered, the person would have access to all parts of the site.
i would put in meta info so i get no search engine crawelers...
i am going to register the domain at namecheap.com
anybody know what i should do about free hosting? i might resort to yahoo if worse comes to worse...
here is antoher quesion:
i have great hosting right now, ipowerweb. i use it for my main site, technicalgeek.com
i have 800 mb available, and i don't even think i am using 300. is there any way i can allow space on this hosting service to another domain, or am I talking crazy?
i'm sorry, i am very tired...
thanks for any input, i really need the help

Not too sure about other control panel, but Cpanel allows you to create password protected directory, in other words, when a user type in the url in the address bar, he will be prompted for username and password. However, this method only allows you to create one username and one password.

If you are thinking of using multi-username & passwords, you will need a database. Write a code that needs UN and PW before accessing to the secure area and insert the code on every single page that needs login information.

Why use free hosting when you can get a really good deal on hosting nowaday? Someone from this board might be able to offer you a small hosting account for $0.50/month.

If you have a reseller account, you then can create as many account as possible for each domain. Otherwise no...

I would actually suggest a CMS like Mambo. I was only going to use it for a commercial purpose, but in the process liked it's functions & decided to use it as a blog also.

If you already have hosting, why get more hosting for your new site? Why not just create a subdomain if you can. Most paid hosting supports subdomains.

i was thinking about a sub domain, but i really want a new domain. i purchased it already. i would not like to create a whole database structure just to set up a user name and password.... so how do i set up a single account?

the hosting idea sounds good... any idea where i could make a post on the forum to see if there are any offers?

thanks again...

As soon as you find a host, we will be able to help you.

Not too sure if you can post it in the "Freelance" forum, but you can give it a try, just call it "Hosting needed" or something like that.

Thanks bMind, I have made the post.
If anybody can offer me something similar to what bMind mentioned, please do.

Thanks!

Default script for password protection

There are free scripts available to allow you to create multiple usernames and passwords using .htaccess & .htpasswd control. I can't remember the site but if you do need the info, I will try to check out for you.

I know a very reasonable hosting site, which is:

http://www.theweb-factory.com

But you probably have it in your cpanel already. It is very easy to do, and if you need help just let me know.
