Default Relative Font Sizes????

I've been reading and learning lots about web pages. So much of it contradicts from person to person. Lately, I've been told that my site needs to be a fixed width (based on 800x600). Before I switched it, I spent the time to find out how to make relative font sizes which worked fairly well with my variable width site - but not as nice on fixed width. Most of the sites I've been visiting dont seem to have relative font sizes (where you can select small, medium, large... font size from the IE View-Text Size menu option). Going fixed font sizes would make my site look better and be much more consistent with all browsers, all screen resolutions, etc. Does anyone have any guidelines as to the best way to handle relative fonts (and if it is still a good idea)? Someone has probably already answered this on the forum, but the search pulls up about 10,000 results - sorry if I'm duplicating the question....

Thanks for the advice....

IMO when building websites you have to just say "I can't help everyone all of the time". In this instance, most of the public don't know about resizing their font using that feature, so its mostly not a problem.

As for the 800x600 fixed width, if you are convinced you want to do this. Then I would make the fixed width of the website 750. Because some browsers have odd things on the left and side hand side of the screen including the scrollbar. Depending on the content of the websites a lot of times your can set the width to 100%.
