How to find incoming links???
I saw recently that we can find Google's listings of pages with links to our site by typing in the search field: "link: ourURL and then a keyword or phrase". Example (for my site):
link: http://wind.prohosting.com/johreiki/ power tools
However, when I do that, all that comes up is a page on my own site. This is especially baffling because there is exactly such a "power tools" link on a page of the Open Directory Project, of all places; a page with a Google Page Rank of 5! ( http://dmoz.org/Health/Alternative/R...achers/Remote/)
Can someone explain to me how this can be? And also, how can it be that my site is listed on that ODP page, yet when I search the entire ODP index for it -- using both the URL and "power tools" -- it tells me the site is not listed?
Thanks very much -----

In the past Google only ever showed backlinks above a certain PR threshold (probably a high 3) - but lately this has been a bit screwy. The 'caned' response from Google now is that they only show a "sample" of backlinks to a site. The criteria for this sample is not totally clear (but a PR of the backlink above a high 3 is probably somewhat valid) - but not the only criteria. Backlinks have not been updated in > 4 (?) weeks. You can get a better bicture of backlinks at Altavista or AllTheWeb
The DMOZ sarch function is bugged at the moment. When did you look?

goto...
This will check your popularity across several major engines. When you enter your url, note that there are 3 areas. You can enter your www, no www and any way else that someone might get there, to check them all at once:

Paul -----
Many thanks for this. I'll keep it in my "toolbag" for future use.....
Now another question: any idea why, when I click the "reply" button on these forums, I'm sent back to the forum index and have to click through again, to get back to where I started, and click the "reply" button again....before I finally get a reply form??? (maybe someone from webproworld will read this and have the answer....?)
Be well -----

Thank you! Being graphically-impaired, I can't take credit for the graphics (that has to go to Vintage Designing) but I will for the design, layout, and content.

Confused about backlinks
Hello Everyone.
Question:
Ok, if I have a backlink on a "links" page, with a PR of 5 but the main index page of that site is a PR7, does that mean I am going to take the linking status of the PR7 page, or the PR5 of the links page?
I have always been a little confused about this.
Can someone please clear this up?
Thanks,

Hi Chris,
The way I understand it - You are not going to "take" anything - but you will "share" a small percentage of PR from the page that is linking to you.

Hello Maureen,
Thanks for the reply. What I mean is... if a site links to you that has a PR7 but their actual "Links" page has a PR5, what counts? Is it their PR7 (index page) or is it their "Links" page, which is PR5? This is what doesn't make sense to me. Is the PR7 even relavent or is it only the PR5 page that you are sitting on?

##### My understanding is that the page your link is on is the one the search engines use in their ranking calculations -- in this case, the PR 5 page.

PageRank is page-specific. A site with a PR7 homepage may well have a PR5 links page. All links on the PR5 links page would share in the outgoing PR from that one page. The PageRank of the PR7 homepage (and every other page on the linking site) is irrelevent and has no bearing on your page's PR calculation.
This is why a link from a PR4 content page with only one outgoing link on it (yours) provides a larger boost to your page's PR than a link from a PR5 links page with 150 other links on it.
