Default Google webmaster tool - Preferred domain Setting

Dear Friends,

In google Webmaster Tool when i try to set preferred domain with 2nd and 3rd option with "Display URL as....." i got this message....... "[ ... Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://abc.com/. Please verify http://abc.com/ ... ]"

But this URL is verified, without verification how can i do any activity with the related domain?

Why I am getting this message? Is anyone suggest me how can i set with the 2nd and 3rd option "Display URL as....." This problem is coming with the all domain when i want to do any changes with"Preferred domain.." in my knowledge after when google update webmaster tool with the new look.

Verification usually involves putting a little tag in the header of the index page and then hitting the verify button.

Have you done that. Verification for web tools is different than analytics verification.

The system changed a couple of months ago. For sites without domain preference already set, you need to add both versions of your domain, with and without www, separately and verify them.

If you don't have both versions verified, try that and see if the preference is then available.

I can't send you a link to it because I've not made enough posts on the forum - but this is what Google Webmaster help says:-
To specify your preferred domain:
  1. On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want.
  2. Under Site configuration, click Settings.
  3. In the Preferred domain section, select the option you want.
You may need to reverify ownership of your sites. Because setting a preferred domain impacts both crawling and indexing, we need to ensure that you own both versions. Typically, both versions point to the same physical location, but this is not always the case. Generally, once you have verified one version of the domain, we can easily verify the other by finding the verification HTML file or meta tag. However, if you've removed the file or meta tag, you'll need to repeat the verification steps.

I have done all these steps many time, but could not found any solution.

I experienced this same problem, However, try and save a file which google will give you in html and then upload it as if you are verifying that new addition for the first time and then come back to google webmaster tools and click on the verify site for the new url you have added. Afterward, you can set the preferred domain. It happend to me and I got round it

The new look of google webmastertool is a bit confusing when you are so used to the old interface. It takes time to get used to.

it seems as if no one is responding to your seemingly logical explanation but I will. I'm having the same problem with one of my sites so I will try this out tonight and see if it works for me.

Thanks mang.

There are 2 methods to verify your site. I can't remember which method I first used, but I had experienced difficulties with it. The solution was to use the OTHER verification method. Perhaps you can try doing that.
