Default Google OS?

Is Google Chrome developing a new operating system?
A lot has been heard these days about the new OS.
Is that information really true?

I dont see the point in creating a totally new OS. when the linux and bsd kernal's already exist and are great platforms why reinvent the wheel? 1000 different Linux distros already available.

Expected to be web-focused with a minimal user interface, the lightweight open source operating system will appear initially on netbooks running either x86 or ARM processors. Expansion to the desktop and full-powered laptops will most likely follow.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," wrote Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management and Linus Upson, Engineering Director. "We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds."

If Google does it right, it is an extremely smart move. They can just bump microsoft right out of the picture. I would expect it would take a little while for Google to get it right. I personally wouldn't trust the first few versions. Hackers would be all over trying to crack a new OS.

Since Chrome OS will be free of charge, is supposed to be user friendly, and made by Google, I think it actually has a more of a fighting chance against Microsoft than Apple.

I don't think that the infrastructure of the net is ready for totally cloud computing.. Between dropped connections, bandwidth caps, lack of bandwidth, vanished accounts and data, and dozens of other issues, I just don't think the world is quite ready for it..

Google OS may be a first step in that direction, but the grander issues will keep it from becoming widely adopted IMO.. I think it will end up with a user base similar to that of Linux..

I don't think they are challenging Microsoft - Chrome OS is Google Chrome+Linux kernel - so far, I can't see it reaching farther than netbooks. Google and MS seem to be playing a lot of peek-a-boo right now, but it seems that all the moves are designed to deter rather than outspokenly challenge.

Also, cloud computing is really in its early stages and will require a lot of time and some technological innovations to cast the decisive vote in the world of computing.

As long as the desktop is a better platform for applications and programs you are probably correct.

Nevertheless, interesting to see the evolution of web applications and platforms.

That's exactly what I meant. As for now, cloud-based computing experience which can be compared to full-fledged desktop experience is not achievable due to a number of restrictions, not limited to technical aspects and including, among other things, reluctance to fully trust the cloud. But it's really subject to change, the only question is what it takes and what it results in.
