Are you optimizing or updating your site? In time your site will recover the lost ranking, but now optimize it and apply link building techniques in it..Like submitting it to social bookmarking, forums sig, and blog commenting and posting..

I'd suggest being patient. It may take a while for it to disappear from the SERPs.

A bunch of our phrases dropped in google in late April but rebounded in May.

Keep pursuing good SEO practices (link building, adding content, optimizing your site) and hopefully your SERPs will again improve.

If it really is duplicate content that they stole from you, and not the other way around, heres a resource.

1. Your site is not optimized for search engines.
2. You are doing some spammy stuff.

Don't expect with such tricks that you can rank any longer. Google is moving ahead.

Good luck.

Default Re: Ranking Position is going down?

The drop we experienced yesterday in our search result position is nothing short of disasterous for us. Our online shop of 8 years standing serving thousands of loyal customers, enjoyed first page position in search engine results for it's main key word for years. Now it has dropped back to page three! For no apparent reason! Is Google getting fat and bored? So they have to play with people's lives?

It must be wonderful to tweak around with a system that's working, unwittingly screw it up and go home to sleep soundly, knowing you don't have to account to anyone, or answer emails or deal with the wave of rage, worry and sleepless nights they have caused for tens of thousands of business people, already struggling with soaring prices and deep recession. People with genuinly good websites providing a worthwhile and appreciated service who now have to step aside for countless crappy link farms, pr scams, "Ads from Google" websites, spam and useless directories.

Our website receives nothing but praise for clarity, great design, ease of navigation, and a huge choice. But Google seem to think that's not enough!

Here are some examples of what is now in front of us:

1. jewellery.shop.ebay.com.au - an Australian ebay catagory list!
2. News Results for jewellery with 3 news items listed
3. Jewelinfo4u.com - I cannot make this site out, it doesn't seem to be a shop, the links have errors and my antivirus software stopped a trojan. Very useful!!
4. Shopping results for jewellery:
Jewels and Jewellery from $17 - 31 stores. Click this link and google presents a list. At the top Amazon - click Amazon and it goes to a book about jewellery. Every link on this page goes to the same paperback!
Same thing for Indian jewellery! A book!
Same thing for Victorian Jewellery! A book! Is this Google spam?

5. amazon.com - This link goes to an audio dvd called "jewellery".
6. Long established large High Street chain bricks and mortar jewellery shops for whom the internet is secondary.

Lives depend on our business and God knows the economy makes it hard enough. It's more and more difficult to keep up a flow of orders since this recession began. Some days have been dire, but we've managed to hold fast, keeping up with email marketing to our customers and keeping the website bright and active with regular additions and changes. We have nearly 2,000 products now. But from the moment Google dumped us onto the third page orders almost totally dried up. It was like a kick in the gut!

We've done everything we can to stay within the guidelines for optimum search engine placement, careful not "break the rules". But Google have all but trashed us. The joke is they probably haven't even looked at our website and they probably don't care. They've got big and fat and lazy and forgotten how it is on the way up!

Actually what seems to be happening is that whilst my colleague in London sees us on page 3, here in Scotland I see us on page 1. So I ran the search on a little used computer in a different browser to avoid caching and lo and behold there we were, on page 3.
I have just done the same thing again using yet a different browser and we appear on page 1 again. I just can't figure that our at all!!!

MarkNC: a DC is a datacenter, google has tons of them, and you could 'use' a different one over multiple visits even from the same machine at times, each one can have its own results in differing orders. When google engineers 'tweak' things several DC's may show different results than normal. Give it a few days

Just to let you know that we are back on the 1st page just like some of you said. What a relief! Just need to bumb those long established corporate high-street jewellers off the top spot now.

Been offline for nearly 2 days as a result of a lightning strike which blew out my telephone box. It never rains, it just pours! Pun intended!!

Thanks for your help and encouragement.

It was really annoying to learn that someone has copied what you have
created and wasted your time just to have a good outcome from your site.
And about the lost ranking position.. you must work on it again in order to
get it back.. you will recovered it soon since your site was already on Google's
database.

Since I last posted here my website has been to page 5, back to page 1, then to page 3 and now on page 2 and moving up slowly. Our strongest competitor went to page 21, they must be crawling up the walls!

Even though this has a direct affect on customers and order numbers there seems little that can be done. The site is fully optimised, no broken rules, no cheating, strictly by the book! Tried using the Google Forum to find out what's happening but that was like talking to yourself in a graveyard.

It appears just now that all the large corporations occupy the first page for our main keyword. And here's something interesting; none of the big sites like H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, Argos, Ebay NZ (quite what they are doing in the UK SERPS I'm not sure), Goldsmiths, Debenhams, have a links page or even consider a free reciprocal link arrangement. In fact you can almost hear the laughter echoing down the coridoors of power in response to the request!! It is the medium and small businesses that have to prove their popularity by showing lots of quality links, I guess the big boys have already proved it.

Here's another truth that makes of mockery of this particular part of the system. Most link exchanges do not even see past each others home page or links page, let alone use each other!

If a search engine says they don't take paid submissions so everyone can have an equal crack of the whip, how do they justify putting paid for "sponsored links" above everyone else? On AOL the other day half the first page was taken up with paid for sponsored links. The real stonker comes when you click on them and find there is absolutely nothing there that is relevant to your search query.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that what the last couple of weeks has shown me is we have no control at all over our websites position, and this after all, is the single most important issue when it comes to attracting visitors. I feel sorry for those folks who have forked out a fortune for a professional SEO company to put them on the map, because even they are subject to the dreaded secret algorythm that Google and other search engines so proudly claim to be fair.

I'm still trying to work out a better way because I know there is one. As soon as I have the answer I will share it with you. But for now, I dance with Google, trying desperately to keep in step with their changes. To be fair to them, I honestly don't think they know what's going on either!

How can you be so sure that your site is fully optimized for Google? I hear that all over the place and when I look at those sites, there are not optimized at all.
